Best small LAN game

but they need IPX :(

It's easy enough to install IPX in XP.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Install > Protocol > Add > NWLink IPX/SPX/NETBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol > OK

Z . Could be a bugger to run on XP/Vista IIRC.

Go for Z: Steel Soldiers instead, that' a good lan game.

Not free though, but should be uber cheap.

We still have Quake 2 knocking around on our network at work, very dated but still fun. :)

id say Rakion or GunBound, but i'm unsure if they're LAN games? can anyone clarify? they're both quite fun :)

Online only, and worms is better than GB.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can't get IPX in vista. I had to dual boot XP to play RA2 against my brother over lan.

I know Hamachi can do IPX in XP but I haven't tried it in Vista, Hamachi does tunnel the IPX protocol though.

Flatout / Flatout2 is always good for a laugh in a LAN environment. Think Destruction Derby and you'll be along the right lines :D

I remember a game of C&C Red Alert with a modified rules.ini file, we had nuclear bombers and amphibious tanks. Download RedEdit 98 Professional from http://www.childs-play-software.co.uk - you can change almost any setting in the game (I actually bought this software years ago when it cost £10).

Why are people still recommending FPS's

Coz they is fick what right? ;)

Kinda sad that when you mention t'internet or LAN gaming all most people ever think of is FPSs; especially given the diverse multitude of games out there.

Got to give my vote for Red Alert, was great back in the Epson days in Wakefield. I think you have to slow it down nowadays too though as it runs really fast on todays computers.
