best starter lens for Nikon D5100

Deffo the 18-105mm I've not long since got it with a D5100 and it's perfect for beginners starting to find their style. Gives a nice range to play with without being big, heavy or expensive!
 
Yeah don't get the 18-55. It's decent but you'd want to replace it almost straight away as soon as you start getting into photography. The 18-105 and 35 1.8 are both great lenses and you'd have a fair while longer before you grew out of them

They compliment each other nicely as well.
 
I might stick my neck out here and say I actually miss the 18-55 kit lens (I now have the 18-105) It's very light and a nice "low key" lens to have attached as a walk around.
 
It is all relative, the 18-195 is incredibly light to me, far light than my 24-70 and 70-200mm f2.8 combo, and also ,ugh lighter than my lightweight hiking lens the 16-85 which ihas a metal barrels and metal mount
