Hi guys. Looking for a 4TB hard drive for my dads PC. He needs it just for storage. But would be good to get decent transfer rate. I was looking at the Western Digital Caviar Red 4TB SATA 6Gb/s. Don't need RAID. Is this a good choice? Or any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance

I'm using the 2TB red as storage and its a good drive, can't really fault it. A lot better than the greens they are terrible, slow, clicky and unreliable. transfer speeds are reasonable 90MB/s +/- .

I find the WD Green to be ok if used only for storage but the write speed on to it is a bit dismal.

Had two greens. 1TB and 2TB noisy / slow. Bought the 1TB it died after year or so sold the replacement to a mate after awhile to upgrade to a 2TB. That didnt last very long either... can't say I recommend them over anything tbh. god awful.

Seagate make better drives, that would be my preference over WD. I have a family member who works in the industry (hard drive repair), and from a technical point of view, I am assured WD are inferior to Seagate. Hitachi probably have the edge over them all, but their drives are expensive owing to the fact their production volume is very low.

Buy 2x 4tb reds. One for storage and the second for a backup of that storage.

Unless he's already got another backup solution..
