I just want some to listen to the radio at work with, but I don't want them to fall apart after five minutes.

Any recommendations?

In ear buds would be best I think.

Are skull candy any good? There's some for £7 at the moment.

I recently (just over a week ago) picked up a pair of Sony ED21LP headphones for just under a tenner. If you shop around online you should find prices close to that.

It's the second time I've had these particular models and was instantly impressed for that second time!

They're old designs (had my first pair around 1998) but are little crackers in my opinion.

Great bass, pretty good imaging and decent isolation too. Only issue I have ever noted is that they can be somewhat ear specific due to the bass port that pokes into the ear canal... for example my Mrs couldn't wear them as her ears are quite petite and yet for me they've been absolutely fine.

In the past I've had Gummies, Sennheiser buds, other Sony buds (specifically EX71's and EX81's) and even some Ultimate Ears Metro Fi II's. The Metro's were the only ones of those listed that bettered the ED21LP's - but they should have since they were about three times the cost.

Oh, and as for Skullcandy ear buds - if the majority are made like a set I bought at the start of the year then I wouldn't bother. Got them for my Mrs for a trip to China and they broke before she even set off. They had perhaps 8hrs usage maximum.

I honestly wasn't surprised though since they felt very flimsy when we first took them out of their packaging. Of course it might be a one off. We've got a set of full sized Skullcandy cans which have been used for 4 or 5 years without any issues. I suppose it's the chance you take really! :D

Ordered the Sony MDR-ED21LP ones.

My ears are fairly big so they should be alright!

I'm a HUGE fan of Koss Spark Plugs. They're around £10 ish.
I've been using the same pair for over 5 years now, mainly when I'm out for a walk.

You can obviously get better sound quality for more money, but I've never worn an in ear phone as light, as comfortable and with as low microphonics as these.

Turned up today, not a big user of in-ear earphones so not sure if the fact they're quite tinny is normal?

Shouldn't be. Of course they'll never have the extension of large sealed cans but they should provide some punch. Certainly more than the average in ear design.

I assume they're the Groove style models with the bass port that runs into the ear:

Are they definitely all the way in?

Yeah, possibly. :(

What equaliser settings are available on the radio you're using? Also, is it standard FM radio or DAB?

For comparison I use mine with a Sony NW-A808 MP3 player. Equaliser settings are set to a medium level with only one level of bass boost (out of three) - any more and it overtakes the music by a margin.

Volume range on that unit also runs from 0 to 30 and I find 10 suitable for average listening and 15 for loud. Any louder and they get uncomfortable.

Might be worth trying them with a CD or MP3 player just to check that they're not faulty.

Just listening to MGMT using iTunes now, sounds all-right with medium audio enhancement.

Try Asda. I picked up some Maxell headphones for £2 and they are half decent, they look like they can last a few months at least.

Finding the Sony MDR-ED21LP's a bit annoying, they keep moving in my ear and so they go quiet as they're not in my ear canal properly.
