Does anyone have any recommendations for a router which allows for scheduled availability and also good QOS handling.

I have a BT Homehub 2 and this has a good management on allowed times of usage for the devices but as far as I can see no QOS - due to certain PC's on the network I really need to reduce their priorty on the network.

Needs to have wireless and wired connectivity

Any recommendations/Experiences?

If you're prepared to do some study to create the right configs, you can't do much better than a second hand Cisco. Alternatively, a linux firewall distro like PFsense or IPCop are very cheap if you have spare computer to run it on.

Some of the CISCO's don't seem that expensive. Another machine isn't really an option - it's only a 4 machine network. tbh after reading about the Zyxel it seems very configurable regarding QOS and appears to cover what I want - with the exception of no ability to disable machines based on time.

It seems to be a relatively new unit so as soon as I have tested it I'll post an update next week

Bearing in mind the router I got was a staggering £29.99 the customisation within the web interface is fairly impressive. So far I have now set up my QOS so my machine is king and then split down the others ones to varying degrees below that. Not had a proper test yet but one of the users who usually causes me issue connected in whilst I was in a game and I didn't notice so cross fingers for a better test in th enext few days but looks good. I have had an issue with wireless dropping (I connect via cat5) but I think that is a channel clash so tweaked that. I've also dropped internet connection a couple of times but i'm not sure if that is BT or my router. Done some tweaks so its no longer making assumptions on my connection and see if that resolves.

So if the wifi and internet aspect are resolved then huge thumbs up - if not then I may have to return :)

Will post further

I'm eying up the Billion BiPAC 7800N as my next router, it looks excellent, can't find any bad words said against it (besides the looks :p)

I've looked at this one a bit more and it does seem excellent. I may even change to this one. The Zyxel is good but it only does QOS it doesn't look at the bandwidth management aspect of the connection. I'll have a ponder :)

OK returning Zyxel and Billion is in place. I think - early days yet - but I may have it cracked. The QOS doesn't have much impact but I can say how much bandwidth the other devices can get and restricting that for the pc in question appears to have a negligible affect for the machine but frees mine up. Will post next week once I have a better idea!

All still good - pretty sure I now have a great setup. Discovered another feature that raises the router even further up in my estimation. You can block pcs mac addresses from the internet by time schedule - so children are now disabled from the internet at bedtime and homework time. They can still access printing so homework is unaffected. Just love this router - Bledd if you're still looking at it - get it :)
