I have a new case for my PC and I need to transfer all the components over. I have two places I can really do this with enough room. The kitchen floor (which is lino) and my big wooden table. However the table would need to hove a cover on it, which is plasticy one side and cotton on the flipside. Which of these surfaces would provide the least risk to static when transferring my PC over to its new case?

Most carpets are static monsters
I usually go for the table , with table cloth to stop the scratches
but a lino floor should be ok too , best of luck with the build :D

when building up new systems, i usually lay the parts on the cardboard boxes they came in. if youve still got the box for your new case, then you can always use that ;-)

I would go for the table. No need to kneel or sit awkwardly and you dont run the risk of someone [or you] stomping through and crushing something :D

If you're worried about static, get your psu in the case and plug the power lead in. Make sure the psu is switched OFF and also switch off the socket if you can. Any static on the table top will be earthed via the case.

Table. :)

Static should not be an issue really, touch a radiator pipe (unpainted) every so often and the casing to prevent any ESD.

The plastic cloth shouldnt be too much of a concern regarding static then? can't wait to see my PC in a nice ATCS style Praetorian :D

You have to be careful with this... I have always used our radiators for discharging myself and I recently found out that although most of the radiators have a copper pipe leading under the floorboard, most of the piping is plastic!

I use the tap now :D Although if your tap has PVC piping it will be of no help either.

That must be a new development then, plastic!

Never thought about it, all the ones I have seen are all copper, I will keep that in mind thanks. :)

Anti Static wrist bands are a waste of time though, just holding the case does the same job! :)

Depends whats in the pipes, if it's water (and the pipes you touch are metal it will earth you somewhere along the line. If it's oil, find another pipe. Mains water pipes (usually the cold ones ;)) should be earthed anyway so you can use on of them.

Gives you two hands to use rather than one ;).
