Best Surround Card

Oh yeah, well the ZXR wines and dines, walks in the park makes love all night, and makes coffee & breakfast for her in the morning.
The Xonar really just has a sweaty fumble in the bushes and suffers brewers droop a few minutes in, resulting in her giving you a made up number... If any!

Thats the comparison!

Now this made me LOL! Now I cant wait for my new baby to arrive.

P.S :
There's nothing wrong with a sweaty fumble in the bushes, and brewers droop happens even to the best of us at times.... and besides, the bitch can make her own bleedin' breakfast and mine too while she's at it :D

Yes, I also got a DG and a DGX ( none are being used I will admit ) and for the price, you cannot argue, they are great cards.

I tell a lie... as of a couple of days ago, I threw the DGX into my daughters PC.

Some good info there, thanks guys.

I've been studying the Creative ZxR, in partcular the connectivity, and even in particular-er the analog ports. This has me asking some very serious questions.

1. Why the **** are the Front Left & Front Right ports separate mono RCA ports, but the Rear Left & Rear Right port is a single 3.5mm TRS stereo port? (This also applies to the Sub & Centre speaker port)

2. With the Front L & Front R channels each receiving their own mono signal, the result is 2 speakers producing 2 completely different sounds.

But the Rear L & Rear Right is a 3.5 TRS stereo jack, does this not mean that when the signal is split and sent to the speakers the result is that both speakers produce the exact same sounds?
Surely Rear speakers (or the Sub & Centre speakers for that matter) produce completely different sounds thus giving the surround effect. Where/when/how is the signal split to produce completely different sounds from the relevant speaker?
Nope, The TRS sockets share a common ground but separate signal channels meaning the sound is different on each channel. (like how headphones work using a single TRS connection yet you still get separate left and right channels.) The front channels being RCA is for the hifi crowd, as TRS inputs aren't normally featured on domestic hifi. The ST/STX come with an RCA to TRS socket adaptor for those with pc speakers. (AFAIK, the ZxR comes with one too) The surround connections were probably done as 3.5mm TRS as there wasn't enough space to have done it as RCA and have all the other connections too. The entire HDAV H6 daughter board I have with my ST is taken up with RCA connections for 7.1 surround. (leaving no room for any additional inputs) Had the ZxR been released prior to my buying the ST, I'd have gone for the creative.

ZxR arrived today. Got it delivered to work, can't wait to get home an play with it (the card that is....).

Man it's going to be a helluva long day!!

Yeah yeah, wottevva!

Man it's going to be a helluva long day!!

Well, 5 minutes ...

LOL

And then you can have a play with the sound card, and get back to us on your views.

BTW:

What speaker setup are you using?
Its all very well using a top end card, but if you are using £19.99 Billy lal special offers, then you just wasted hard cash for nowt... Just asking.

Well I have the Sennheiser HD650's for über personal stereo listening, and around 2 years ago I bought an all-in-one 3D bluray 5.1 home cinema setup. It's a really good setup for an all-in-one system, cost me like €480 / £400. It is probably the best quality system available without going into AV amps and speaker setups. It has exceeded my expectations of such a "cheaper" option as far as surround sound goes.

I plan to get a separate AV amp & speakers within the next 12 months. I'm planning to save up maybe €1500 - €2000 tops and get myself a mind-blowingly good system. And now I have the card to go along with that future plan :-)

I'll be interested to see what this card sounds like with my 5.1 system, but for the moment I'm mainly interested in the stereo for my headphones.

And just for the craic I might hook up the PS3 to the card via the optical input and see how she processes the audio through the headphones and the 5.1 system! Will be interesting to hear Grand Theft Auto 5 being played through a Creative ZxR next month :-D

I have just gone through a kind of mid-life crisis with my main PC and its sound setup.

Not the first time and not the last I got to admit.

I am currently running Altec Lansing 995 Speakers. They are 5.1.
I have in the last 3 months, spent over £2K on various audio plonkings, including trying out external / Firewire sound options from terratek and M-Audio... I have kept the low end M-Audio stuff cos I just like my PC Desk to look busy and so I have built them into my desk unit ( sad but true ) and in the end, I am back on my Altect 955 setup and Creative ZXR.

I cannot use seperate AMP / Speakers on my main PC due to space, and so Desktop satellites are my only real option.

I bought a Bose companion 5 and thats ended upstairs and it will go onto my Linux PC, I have a Bose cinemate that I bought for the Firewire thingies when I wanted to go to 2.1 but thats ended up on my Media PC and so that sounds sweet as a nut now istead of the JBL Dolby junk.

I have tried a number of other options lately but I just keep going back to the Altec Lansing 955 speakers because they are giving me a sound that I absolutely adore. They are not the best setup I have, no no no, but they are my favourite by far.

Space and budget are huge factors in buying any audio equipment. I emptied my room entirely around 2 years ago and then cleaned and painted the whole place, laid a new wood floor, and then set up all my video & audio equipment, and then built the rest of the room around that. And I still don't have my ideal setup!

It takes time, effort, and of course money to do it all but sometimes starting from scratch is the best option. But if that really is out of the question, stick with what you know and love!

I installed the ZxR last night. Very easy to install, software very straightforward to setup, but who cares about that.......OMFG the sound is......WOW!

I tried it out on my home cinema first with a bit of music which sounded amazing! Then I threw on Avengers Assemble for a few minutes, and then Attack of the Clones (the bit with the mines detonating the asteroid field) and BOOOOOOOOOM! Words cannot describe the epicness of what I heard!

Then came the real test....the Sennheiser HD650's. Plugged 'em in, switched to 2CH stereo headphones, and had my mind blown. This is quite literally the best audio I have ever heard in my life.

My descriptions do not do it justice. If you are torn between the ASUS STX and the ZxR, rest assured the ZxR is truly incredible for both stereo and 5.1.

In conclusion........bloody WOW!

Thats a shame, I just put an Asus D2X in my build :(

No worries there mate, the D2X is a good card. My bro has one in his machine and it gives superb sound. The ZxR is quite pricey at 200 quid, but well worth it for the quality sound it gives in both 2-CH & 5.1 outputs. The D2X is a quality card in it's price range. Don't be too miffed my man. Wait a while and get used to the D2X, you can always make an upgrade in a few months if you want.

The ZXR is the cream of the crop card with every single little feature available. But as I said before using its S/PDIF out is no different to a Xonar DX. Your future AV receiver will do the work.

But yeah, the card's headphone AMP would defiantly do your HD650 justice :) Enjoy!

Just out of interest, what card was you using before?

I only built my machine 2 months ago and I just used Sabertooth Z77 onboard audio!! So you can imagine the major difference now with the ZxR.

But my bro had the Xonar D2X which is a very decent card. I'd be well used to the sound from that bad boy. Still nothing compared to the ZxR, it truly is the best available.

I is a happy bunny :)

Yes, dont it just.

My attic is a great example. I have my studio setup in there. It cost me £3000 just to soundproof the room, and so now, in the middle of the night, I can hammer the hell out of the drumkit and no one can hear a thing... Bliss... Although not now cos Im in a wheelchair so bum to that, but you know what I mean.

I have my Atari setup in there, and I use the Atari for music recording and I am using Yamaha Monitors and again, these can be bettered these days, but I like the sound they give... I m used to that now.

My server is running an AMP however, with a simple 2 speaker setup. The AMP is a vinci 2125 so not the best but certainly a seriously fantastic sound, and I am using Warfdale dovedale 3 cabinets with various speakers aquired from various sources. The Bass is Sony, the Middle and Low Middle are from my wifes old Hifi that was Denon iirc and has a really warm sound and I stole them and said her Hifi Blew up ( god Im such a git ), while the tweeters are simply Maplin jobs. The crossovers are my own home made jobs so should be swapped for proper ones, but they are doing a great job, so Im not swapping when I feel I dont need to.
But these speakers are giving a sound that is simply embarrassing everything else I have looked at, so while the cabinets are 40 years old, sometimes, new isnt necessarily better.

My media PC that I knocked up recently is Bose / Xonar based.

The snag with that setup is that when quiet, you simply cannot hear the higher frequency sounds, just low to mid. When you crank it up, they come in to play and buy do they play nicely, but late at night, when you're forced to have the volume down. the sound is really poor.

I chucked my Hex core PC there to play about for a bit ( The HEX is the new Media PC but it does not fit under the unit ) and with the EQ plonked right up, ( XFI Fatality platinum ) its semi-solved that issue, but again, I like to play my music with flat EQ to get the best that the producers wanted.

Anyway, I can go on and on ( Proof right here ) and so I will leave it there.
