Best system for £350 & Ready built vs Self built (is it worth it?) [now with pics!]

Hi guys,

First post here...was looking at buying a PC from PC world but felt like having a go myself. All seemed good, until I saw the following from a supermarket:

Compaq CQ5223 Desktop PC with 18.5" PC Monitor (AMD Athlon™II x4 620, 3GB, 320GB, Windows 7 Premium)
for £380 delivered..with a monitor!

I've specced up the following, comes to around £325 inc shipping. Will be adding a case and PSU as well. Will probably bring this to £375 delivered without a monitor.

I'm wondering if the system I've specced below is worthwhile? Oh..and I was also wondering if it's all compatible? :)

I will be using it for internet, pictures, watching films, burning dvds...not gaming though. What do you think?
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz AM3 £75

Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Socket AM3 onboard DVI VGA HDMI 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard £72

RAM: Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V £80

Hard drive: Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache - OEM £70

Sony AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM Internal SATA Black Bare Drive - OEM £17

Plus shipping etc = £325

I actually fancy building a computer from scratch...but I'm doubting whether it's worthwhile? Will there be much difference between the self build & the compaq from a supermarket?

Thanks for all your help

You'll need to remove the competitor link.

Builds like that use cheap unbranded parts to save on money whereas you'll notice everything in the machine you've specced yourself is a known name.

You've also got a higher specced machine there if you do it yourself...

More ram
Over 3x the HDD space (and a lightning fast HDD)

You can customise it better as well and it when it comes to upgrades you'll have got a better knowledge of computer building :)

I vote DIY :)

The title of that page states x4(quad), yet the item description lists the processor as x2(dual). I'm not sure that this forum allows the posting of links from other retailers btw mate, just a heads up.

its only tesco i think everyone know were tesco is. and would anyone on here buy a pc from there. i dont think so. build a pc your self will be a lot better and upgradeable as well.

This is still an online shop. Advertising other places online sales won't help this shop at all will it? Yeah it isn't allowed, why would they pay their hosting fees to talk about another site selling similar items? use your loaf.

BTW. Read the FAQ.

* Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
* Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Hi guys,

The difference is that with Tesco's build you get:
Chinese PSU that won't allow you to install better GPU in the future due to not having enough power or amps on PCI-E rails. PSU that might blow up and take everything with it or just be unstable and die easily.

Crap unbranded memory that can cause instability issues and which performance is terrible.

Fail cheapo 20pound matx board that has locked BIOS with no options to upgrade whatsoever.

Probably cheap slow HDD as well and fail case that won't fit anything other than the stuff it came with.

*+Pros:
---------
+ It's cheap
+ It's cheaper
+ It's cheapest ... and comes with monitor and OS
+ It's plenty enough for web surfing, odd movie watching, office work and playing 4yr old+ games.
+ You get enough clubcard points to buy a beer or two for free

*-Cons:
- It's useless for gaming other than 4yr old titles.
- Allows no upgrade or OC options whatsoever
- It's got terrible performance compared to high quality branded parts

Slightly more expensive due to lack of monitor and OS (100quid worth stuff?).

Decent board with good OC options and upgrade possibility to better CPUs now or in the future.

550BE - I don't have to say anything else, amazing performance for value and if you get lucky you might unlock 2extra cores getting a high end quad for half price.

1600MHZ DDR3 memory with tight c7 timings ( i wonder if the tesco ones were better than c10 ) with headroom for OC and decent heatspreaders to keep it nice and cool.

Case - I'm not a fan of all mid tower cases but it's best you can get for this price range and is definitely a lot better than the tesco's , should allow you to fit bigger GPUs as well and/or more hdds.

HDD - pretty much best sata hdd you can get now, definitely better than what tesco offers. And yes, HDD speed does make a lot of difference.

Better onboard GPU which even tho is not the newest or most powerfull out there, is good enough to play most games on low res still.

*-Cons:
- The price comes out around 100GBP more expensive.
- You don't get clubcard points so not only you're broke but you won't get your free beer either.

PS. remove competitors link, it's not allowed if you read the forum rules.

let the mods decide, no need to hammer him !

Tesco's business model isn't solely computer hardware so there's no problem linking to them.

It really depends what you want it for. If it's a cheap machine to do word processing on, you'll struggle to beat the cheap packages you can pick up somewhere like that. If you're wanting it as the basis of a gaming machine to upgrade and improve in the future don't bother, as it'll be far far more hassle than it's worth.

Edit - also, afaik Compaq use Asus motherboards, albeit not top of the line ones but it's not going to be some ultra cheap LingwongTEK thing.

Whoa guys, thanks for all the reponses...wasn't expecting so many!

Think I will go with the self build...as ultimately I want a bigger screen..and it'll be fun ;) ...even though the deal I posted seems very difficult to beat!

So...PhoenixUK suggested the AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550. Would you say this is a better choice than the AMD II x4 620?

Hopefully looking to get everything ordered today...looking forward to it!

PS I did read the rules although I thought the link I supplied would be okay, as they were not hardware suppliers/weren't selling a product that was similar to OCs. Anyway, edited just in case :)

Bought, delivered and built...(within 2 hours thanks to greywolf's guide stickied in this forum) :)

Will post some pics/thoughts tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone

depends on end user. easy to say "you can upgrade" but 60% of people would rather new build.

WE ALL KNOW that upgrading is easy and convenient, but 40% don't.

Depends. It all depends.

Ok, so as I said, all bought, delivered and built.

Went for the quad core in the end & the 1TB F3 Samsung.

The build was a lot easier than I expected - thanks to greywolf's guide. Managed to get it all done within 2 hours.

Here are some pics:

Thoughts

  • Easy to build, great fun.
  • Runs quickly...major improvement from old Dell Dimension E520
  • Case feels a bit cheap - the front panel moves when I plug in USB devices
  • Quite loud - probably louder than my old Dell Dimension E520 - I've installed ASUS PC Probe II...I think the fans are on the lowest setting I think? Anything I can do to quieten it down?

Overall...happy :D
