Best tactic for getting rid of stuff?

I tend to just take stuff to a local charity shop now, even trying to give stuff away involves effort with posting online on free sites and then people not bothering to turn up. Trying to sell anything is just painful.

Get a new lady in your life, they are experts at deciding what you no longer need and are experienced in all the platforms for getting rid of it.

Thank you all for the tips. I put some stuff on Facebook Marketplace at bargain prices and received loads of messages from people wanting to buy. Unfortunately not going great so far, as I waited in for an hour for the first guy who responded (and sent me multiple messages) to turn up. No sign of him and he then removed himself from the chat when I sent him a follow up message. Why do people bother agreeing a time and then not show up?

Marketplace is a nightmare.

The Facebook free items groups near me are a lot better, but they're also policed by these absolutely militant moderators which is hilarious. They ban people for not saying thank you and the like. We almost got in trouble with them because we'd given an item away to the first responder, but the rules unbeknownst to us were to wait 4 hours and then pick at random.

but at least people are polite and turn up

I've got rid of so many pieces of furniture and older but working electric stuff, just by sticking it at the bottom of the drive and putting a sticker on saying if you want it take it. Most things go in a few hours

These days most people just go to the tip, cough, recycling centre.

Amazing how free stuff managed to get devalued, what a world we live in. But that's also thanks to those people as mentioned who time waste. Sad really.

Car boot is good if you price to sell and enjoy it. If you aren't into car boots, don't bother, again a time wasting exercise.

I've often wondered who these losers are that just love to waste people's time. Like what do you actually get out of saying to someone yeah I'll have that, arrange a time to pick it up and then just ghost the person. If you genuinely no longer want it that's fine at least be an adult about it and say sorry no longer want it / no longer need it.

When we were ripping out the kitchen, I stuck all the cabinets up on gumtree for free - usually useful for things like a garage/shed or even a utility room if you can't afford a new kitchen. Anyway based on previous gumtree experience of majority being time wasters I put it up as first come first serve - they'll be on my driveway on a Saturday morning, just help yourself, no need to knock. I did have one guy turn up and grab some stuff but then I had someone send me a few messages asking if I could put some aside as he was kitting out a van with a mini kitchen, he arranged twice to pick them up and both times failed to show.

I always hated the thought that someone had messaged me to say they wanted the item, made the effort to travel some reasonable distance and then find out I'd already given it away. As I know I'd be royally ****** off if it was me. So I don't know why people feel it's acceptable to do it the other way around. I now just do first come first serve, or if you genuinely want me to hold something for you then sending over a small deposit - it's funny how that fends off the timewasters.

In London (Hornchurch) you can leave stuff at front of your property and it will literally be gone within 2h.

When you tune your eye in to see the guys going around in Vans trawling for scrap/electronics/resellable rubbish you'll notice 100s....

If it aint bolted down its gone....

Reminds me of this.

What you on about bruv. Why should we watch a random YouTube vid that you haven’t linked? Spam??

It contains words that sound like Puck and Luck in the video Bro and these usually get removed by those most brilliant mods.

It is a funny video related to Marketplace blood

You might find that there are local charities that will redistribute furniture. Our local council does this as well.
We got the council to pick up a bunch of chunky IKEA bookcases we no longer needed. Saved me multiple trips to the dump.

List as "free to pickup on the kerbside/front garden at <address>, first come first served" or similar.
No further likely painful interactions required by you in responding to messages etc, you've added 0 information barriers & time-based urgency.
