Best Time to Upgrade?

Hey guys,

When do you think it's the best time to upgrade my computer this year? I'm an AMD and ATI fan (no flaming please) so should I wait for both of their next generation stuff to come out? I hear that AMD are supposed to be unveiling their quad-core during the second half of this year. Also, when are ATI's Dx10 cards coming?

The reason I ask is I don't want to jump the gun, upgrade now, and find that the components I just baught have dropped in price masively a month later because of the new tech arriving.

Cheers

Most people here will probably tell you to upgrade when you see the need to and that if you wait you can be waiting for a lifetime.

ATI's next gen cards are supposedly coming out at the end of next month but who knows if it is not delayed again. But when they do come out the whole range of cards will be available rather than just the top end cards. DX10 cards are worth the wait I think as there are no DX10 games yet but if you are waiting for Barcelona it is still quite a long time away yet.

No such thing as a best time my only advice is never upgrade in stages
just save and do in one go try to sell on replace gpu within a year same goes with cpu.The ide were suddenly going to see 8800's at £100 and core 2 duos at £50 in april is just hype.

I agree. I dont expect to see much of a drop, if any, in April. But if your really conservative of money (like me :P) then you could buy the motherboard and ram now and wait till next month to see what happens with the CPU prices.

theres always new tech in a few months just save up and bomb it at once

If you do that when will the waiting end? There is always going to be new gear to have but there is a time you should just get whats current or last gen stuff as it will be cheaper.

Personally i would think about getting a dx10 in the summerish time and wait and see what happens with the cpu market.

Buy RAM, and if nessercary new Keyboard, mouse etc.

Personally i dunno what the future brings for R600s or Barcelonas, but if I had the cash, I'd buy that honking BFG SLi mobo, a 2.4 conroe, or quad if i had the money, a enermax galaxy 800w, and in the future, when prices drop (baring in mind how long dx9 lasted) I'd buy a second bfg 8800 GTS 640 to Sli with, since i doubt many leaps in bounds, with performance will happen with the r600 compaired to 8800, it might be faster, and / or a more efficiently built gpu, faster etc, but SLi is overkill, and overkill is good, especially if u wait for the second gpu when it goes waaay down in price.

or if u want a real machine to be proud of, Buy one of those new Commodores :D just think, 64-bit Frostbite...donkey kong, GTFO Crysis.

Well what's the point of having parts you cannot use
just get in one go delivery cost cheaper too.

Well he wont be able to use them for less than 3 weeks. Then he can buy the cpu. The motherboard and ram wont go down in price any time soon. Yes the price will be cheaper to buy in one, but by only like £8.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Another quick question: I'll be upgrading CPU+mobo+RAM+gfx. So I'll be making the switch from AGP->PCIe and was interested to know if my current PSU has the right connectors. Are some special ones needed for PCIe?

Cheers

What is your current PSU?

Yes PCI-E cards require a PCI-E 6-pin +12V plug, the card will usually come with a molex->PCI-E 6-Pin adapter so as long as your PSU has enough amperage for the +12V rail you should be fine.

Also new mobo will require a 24-pin ATX connector as opposed to the traditional 20-pin, but again adapter is available.
