Hi im looking to upgrade my PC thinking i might want to go back to intel after a long long time with AMD.
Current specs are:

DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D
AMD Dual core 4400+
2x 1GB OCZ (cant remember speed off hand pc4000 or something)
Radeon X1800 XT 512mb

COULD spend upwards of around 400 quid if need be. Main use is going to be gaming, and mainly COD4 which i am ownage at (lol)

any help appreciated.

just get a better graphics card as your cpu is good enough for most games anyway. if a faster cpu is desired, just overclock your current cpu if you havent already done so.
i suggest a 8800GT as its nearly as fast as the 8800GTX or alternatively wait for the new 8800GTS that should be out soon (hopefully) which should beat the 8800GTX.

hmm.. thanks for the replies, yes its the socket 939 version.. so im at a dead end huh?

maybe a new pc is in order?

Looks like the GTX is still the best going by some benchies, best bet is to get a GT. If you spent 500 quid you could get a new mobo, cpu, ram and gpu.

Probably something like this-

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB)
(£55.21)

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£76.36)

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series
(£35.24)

Zotac GeForce 8800 GT AMP 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
(£199.74)

Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
(£30.54)

Sub Total : £337.95
Total : £407.61

For an extra tenner you could get the Abit IP35, but the Gigabyte board is sufficient.

That processor overclocks massively once you've got it on a third party cooler. You're almost guaranteed to get at least 3Ghz out of it, and 3.5 pretty easily. E2180 f.t.w.!! :)

a little over but it will be a longer lasting upgrade tbh

good spec cupra! :) and if you drop the Q6600 to the OEM version and get an aftermarket cooler such as a freezer7/tuniq tower/ninja etc. then it should clock to around twice the stock speed.

I dont think its the best time for a new pc, my suggestion is to get an aftermarket cooler, overclock your processor, get a new GPU, and wait for at least Nehalem (Intels next radical change). That change will probably require a new socket as well as the memory controller will be on the CPU, similarly to AMD cpus.

Besides, you already have a dual core, the real world difference is not that big if you ask me.

well i priced up the individual parts and it was about 80 quid more so i dont mind paying that, means i wont have to go through the time building it etc etc.

Building it is the best part. Its like owning a Ferrari and having someone else drive it while you sit in the passenger seat.
