just wondering which is better for good air flow thru my case, having the side fan intaking air or expelling air? also can any1 tell me how beneficial it is to attach an intake fan behind the blanking plates where extra drives normally go on the front a a case, can i just cable tie/adhese one in place?

Side fans should almost always be intake. Maybe people don't like side fans as they 'disturb' airflow.

The benefits of having a fan in the 5 inch bays is that it feeds cool outside air to the ram and heatsink.

Most people who mount a fan in the front bays when the case isn't designed to have one fitted there use zip ties.

As long as there are holes in the blanking plates, then go for it. I always have 1 intake on the front to cool my drives, and expel the hot air out the back. With regrads to the side fan, its usually better to have as an intake. Experiment!

Ok cheers fellas. I probably don't really need another front intake fan, current idle temps are round about 31/26/30/25. But I've got the addiction that comes with a first build and as my experience is limited I thought playing about or adding extra fans was a risk free way to help cure my 'itch' lol

I dealt with my side fan by replacing the panel with a solid one. Significantly improved temperatures and decreased noise. Whether this would benefit you is hard to predict, I'd guess if you have a graphics card dumping heat into your case then you should set it to exhaust. I suggest you try it facing both ways and try taping over the hole, check temperatures in each case.

Intake where the optical drives are is almost always a good idea.
