It's a personal thing isn't it :) But i don't think Mondeo's have the best image really do they? :p
I dont really see whats wrong with them. I wouldnt feel ashamed to be seen driving one.

It not like its some over done Corsa is it.

Could pick up a facelift TDCI focus for that sort of money, not a bad diesel and in my untainted opinion (not that i own one :P) nicer cars too look at then a mondy (no offence intended!)

maybe cos they are a great car for the money?

Maybe it was a light hearted jibe mate. Sheesh!
Good family wagon if you are into that sort of thing I suppose. The average car for the average man IMO.

My old man has a 120hp 1.9 TDi Vectra. Its a nice enough car - comfortable to drive, seems well built.

If you're thinking about them, look for a newer 1.9 TDi (they come in 120hp or 150hp variants). The older 2.0 TDi engine was pants - I drove a Saab 9-3 with that engine and it sucks.

Does any cheap used car? It's not exactly Mercedes Benz money, is it? You seem to be absolutely obsessed with image, I mean, what is it about something like a Seat Leon 1.6SE that you think will make people in traffic nod in approval but a Mondeo will make them think you are some sort of nutcase?

Do you not think you are PERHAPS a little overdoing it? ;)

My old man has just bought a Mondeo TDCi on a 52 plate. TBH I am not a Ford fan but it is quite a nice car. Goes very well, nice auto box (I hear your groans) and was priced just over the 6K mark. Well equiped and has giant 18" alloys. Given the choice I would have the Mondeo over the Seat any day, I really don't see what all the hype is about.

forget the image thing, i want a car that I am going to like, i'm not interested at what other people think, the reason i'm looking at a mondeo is because ilike the look of it. from new it depreciates a LOT, therefore i am likely to get a lot of car for my money, i.e a 52 plate mondy 2.0TDCi Zetec, new list price, £16,800, used price, £4,250, works out nearly 1/4 it's original price, compare that to mine, '04 seat ibiza 1.2sx, new price ~£8000, currently sell for £6-£6.5k, losing not even 1/4 it's value in 2 years and for that i have alloys and climate control and a cd player - not a lot really

You havent sold it yet ;)

If you want a car capable of overtaking, I'd suggest you avoid the Rover 75 CDT (or CDTi). It's a BIG heavy lardy lump, making it a rubbish "sports saloon". Having said that, has a great interior and is definitely a "step up" inside when compared to other named competition. It also eats miles, and is very comfortable and relaxing.

I tried the Mazda6 diesel whilst on holiday in Italy. Almost a sports saloon with a very perky engine. The interior isn't as good as the Rover, but it makes up for it by being a good deal lighter and does handle well. Definitely got my thumbs up.

I'm guessing the mk3 TDCi will be a very good car. Tried a petrol version and was impressed by everything bar the engine. With a good diesel, would be a great allrounder, and IMO sits somewhere between the Mazda6 and 75.

It's really a question of preference, none of them are bad cars. The Mazda is the most sporty and feels the lightest. The Rover is more relaxed and the least sporty, the Mondeo sits pretty much in the middle.

Beware: There are a LOT of 2001 TDDi Mondeo's advertised as TDCi's. Be careful. The TDDi sucks, the TDCi is great.

I completely agree with this - the TDDi is an awful engine

What is the difference? Is it the engine?

Yep. Ford was never renowned for their diesel engines until the TDCi came along. This is a huge improvement over the older engines

The CDTi Rover 75 has enough urge to overtake comfortably enough. It's not a sports car though granted :)

don't like the rover 75 tbh, looks to OAP for my liking, vectra looks bigger than a mondy, i like toyota avensis but i don't think i'd get much of one for ~£6k.

How long has the mondeo been using the duratorque TDCi engine? is that throughout the range or is it recent coz tbh, i never heard of it till recently.

Vectra is same size as Mondeo but you still don't want one becuase it isn't as good.

Duratorq TDCi introduced in 130bhp form in 2001 and 115bhp form in 2002.
