Best value GPU for 1440p gaming for the next 3 years?

I'm currently putting together a new gaming PC based around AMD 7 7800X3D CPU. I'd like some recommendations on a GPU that will be good for playing mostly FPS's at 1440p with high detail for the next 3 years. My max budget is £800 but if I could get something closer to £500 that would be a win!

Thanks

4070 or 7800 XT are what I'd consider a decent entry level for 1440p cards now, if you can get either for around £450 they come out pretty well price/performance.

It depends on the price of the individual card, but often hard to justify anything nvidia between the 4070 Ti Super (16GB) and the 4070 non-Super (12GB), because you end up paying a really high price for 12GB of VRAM.

7900 XT as close to £600 as possible comes out pretty well overall, with the price, performance and 20GB VRAM.

Another vote for 7900XT. If it's for 3 years you want to be sure you won't run into VRAM issues so that 20GB is the one to go for. Price/performance beats out the other contender 4070Ti Super as well.

I'm in a similar boat. I was going to go for the 4070 TI Super over the 7900XT. When there are good deals on they can be had for about the same price and they're your best future proof options for this price range. (£650 ish) Personally I'm going to wait a few more months and see what the new Nvidia / AMD cards are going to be. (If we ever get details)

If you can wait then wait. AMD are rumoured to be releasing a new mid range GPU soon. It might be right within your budget and if nothing else will push current gen prices down.

If you don't want to wait for new cards, 7900xt would also be my choice although I'd be tempted to wait for black friday for a deal on something stronger.

Would the 7900 GRE be worth considering?

Yes. I have one for 1440p gaming and it's been great so far. It chews through every game I have thrown at it and was a big step up from my old RTX3070 which was constantly running out of vram. I have mine undervolted with hardly any performance loss but a big power saving plus it runs cooler and quieter now although the cooler isn't loud on my card anyway.

Thanks guys, I’m currently on a Laptop with a RTX 4060 and a 12th Gen i7 gaming at 1080p. What kind of jump in performance would I see going to a Desktop with a 7800X3D and 7900 GRE / 7900 XT?

I’m kind of curious to go AMD GPU this time as I’ve only had Nvidia since the 8800GT, think my last AMD GPU was the Radeon X1800. I have vague memories of the AMD drivers being rubbish!!! Hopefully this as changed

I'm not sure if this is completely accurate (they don't review laptops, so far as I know), but TPU's GPU database has the 4060 mobile as equivalent to a 6600 non-XT.

If we take a 6600 non-XT, then this is what they say for the following cards (raster, no upscaling or ray tracing):
4070: +96%
7800 XT: +110%
4070 Super: +127%
7900 GRE: +131%
4070 Ti Super: +166%
7900 XT: +173%

Those numbers can change, depending on the resolution used, the game and the eye candy.
