Does USB work for you?
I couldn't get it working last time I tried - Win7x64 host, XP guest.

Yes, USB works for me...It didn't work for me as well at first. I found that it wouldn't work on usb ports on a pci usb card. Only works on your motherboard's usb ports. I have exactly the same set up as you.

If I remember correctly, I just plugged it in when my guest os booted up and then right click the usb connection icon on your virtual machine window and select the appropriate usb device. If that doesn;t work, you might have to connect the usb device so that your Windows 7 detects it and select the filter for that device on your virtual machine's usb settings in Virtualbox.

My USB aint working at all. Gets detected but for some reason the install software wont run. Only need this so I can use my scanner !!!

The last time I tried VirtualBox (can't remember the version, it was about four months ago), not only did USB passthrough not work with this setup, attempting to attach a USB device would sometimes lock up the host OS requiring a hard reset.

Maybe they've fixed it now, but I'm very happy with VMware Workstation, which is one of those apps which just oozes good design and painstaking development (at a cost, admittedly).

You could try the free VMware Player, which now allows you to create your own virtual machines, although unsurprisingly it's rather feature-limited compared with VMware Workstation or indeed VirtualBox - USB passthrough works perfectly for my old Canon scanner which doesn't have x64 drivers for Windows 7. :)

It's not the LIDE 30 by any chance is it ?
Nope, it's a LiDE 20 - a cheapo model even when I bought it, but it's still fine mechanically and has pretty good image quality, so I'd be annoyed at having to chuck it out because of a greedy manufacturer's policy of planned obsolescence.

The XP x32 drivers work OK in Win7 Pro's XP mode as well as a VMware XP virtual machine, and it also works well with XSane in an Ubuntu VM, so I guess the same would apply for your LiDE 30. :)

wow theres more people using virtualbox than vmware in this thread! I might give it a try :)

Because its free ;), It is also very very good but I wouldn't take the number of users as an indication of its quality compared to VMWare. Personally I use VMWare but having played around with all of them they are all very good. It really just hinges on whether or not any of them offer a feature you need which the others dont.
