Best VPS host?

I want to like Rackspace but I can never work out if they're homepage has been hacked or what. Their prices are just so lol.

£164/mo for a 4GB RAM virtual cloud server (they don't seem to do barebones VPS).

And they have the utter cheek to charge more for Windows OS even though it makes no difference to them what you install on it!

They're v. expensive. If you go to Internet World they have the biggest stand, right where you enter, full of girls and dancers ... they got the biggest marketing drive.

They tried to sell me a server for an extortionate amount. They ask who runs my hosting and I say Vida, and they say "who are they?". I say "a nice company with 1/4 of your prices" to which they let me finish the drink they gave me and go to speak to someone else. Rackspace are for big business who buy from other big business. For normal businesses and people they are far too expensive.

Would AWS EC2 be a silly suggestion? Always had good service from Amazon and their prices for small-scale operations seem to be fairly decent.

Another option to look at would be Azure, assuming that they allow for actual 'servers' rather than a fully managed 'stack as a service' approach - I think they did the last time I looked.

I never understand their pricing to actually be able to make a decision...

Standard On-Demand Instances?
Hi-Memory On-Demand Instances?
Hi-CPU On-Demand Instances?

How about just tell me cores/memory/disk/bandwidth?

I am just being lazy, I am sure if I spent an hour reading through their system I would understand, but why they make it so BSy I don't know.

Well we went with Tagadab in the end. So far, very impressed. Excellent customer service too. Tracert reveals it is definitely hosted inside a Claranet datacenter, so can't get much better than that IMO.

Not silly at all. We're using a micro instance of EC2 for some web hosting. But the costs escalate very quickly after that. And the application we're hosting is fairly RAM heavy - which is something I'm looking to solve in future versions. EC2 would end up costing us an absolute fortune.

The VPS isn't permanent. We just needed a short-mid term solution to get us started. As soon as we pass about 20 customers we will need to start thinking about dedi hardware and colo. But that's fine and is what we did for the last venture which is now up to >80 customers.

Rented dedicated machines can be pretty cheap. I've looked into cloud a few times for our server but we need a tonne of memory to run SQL server so it would become very expensive. We use Poundhost who have been great.
