Best way to convert Files to AVI ?

I want to convert MKV & MP4 Files to AVI Quickly so my partner can play AVI files only on her DVD Player

Don't forget that AVI is only a container for video/audio streams; you'll need to make sure that the codecs in the MKV and MP4 files can be decoded by the DVD player.

I'd recommend Handbrake or AviDemux

^handbrake is no good as it only encodes to mp4. it's all i use so i don't have any suggestions.
