Best way to format a hdd with a virus

I have a portable 2.5 hdd with a back-door bot on it.

Which program do you guys recommend to format the hdd with?

Also if i connect the hdd to my pc is there any chance of the infecting my pc?

I'd use something like UBCD or other linux live CD which you can boot without anything but the infected drive attached. There are a few I remember like Dariks Boot n Nuke (DBAN)

DBAN ask's to :Burn this file to a blank disc and boot the computer with it.

Is there a program that i can just use while im already in the desktop.

If i just do a quick format in windows - will that be enough to get rid of the bot so i can use the hdd as normal again?

Yes as long as nothing is able to execute when the disk is plugged in.

Fluff - just tired it and nothing executed... afaik. harddrive is now empty.

With a hammer, do a long format in windows and it will be fine. (quick tip, turn off auto play on your PC, this way afterwards you can plug it in without your heart skipping a beat)
