From Manchester Airport to Cambridge (anywhere - Station/Bus Station) on Boxing day... I have a friend arriving in Manchester Airport around 4pm and she needs to get to me:). Thing is, i don't know Manchester or travelling around the UK very well.

So can anyone give me any suggestions, she is on a budget.. cheapest way possible.

I tried looking for trains and coaches but not having much luck.

Can any of you amigo's come up with a route?

Thanking you in advance. I will salute you with Jack Daniels on the rocks. :D

train from Man. Airport to Piccadilly, then a Central Trains citylink service from Piccadilly to Peterborough, then a train from Pboro to Cambridge?

Hmm... a budget... a coach may be the best way then :)

Thanks dynabol for the suggestion.

I think she may know someone there, i will suggest driving to meet each other half way. I don't really fancy driving all the way there, just to drive all the way back with a 30min rest period. It is boxing day after all, i am suppose to be watching TV ie Home Alone :).

If anyone else has any suggestions, or is driving to Cambridge hehe (wishful thinking) let me know.

depends on the flight... On Megabus
If you leave Manchester at 9.00am Arrive London 13.30
Depart London 14.30 arrive Oxford 16.15
Depart Oxford 16.30 arrive Cambridge 19.55
Total cost... £15!

But would need to get to Manchester Bus depot from the airport before 9.00am otherwise you can't get the last connection. And it's a hell of a long time to be sat on a bus!

[edit] - Balls just saw the travel time... no way of doing that on most public transport mate!

Might be worth her hiring a car that she can drop off in Cambridge?

Thanks Beren,

I looked up for a car, not sure from the website though if it is to hire one, or if it is to take a group of people to cambridge, or if it costs of her having her own car, so i emailed the website, waiting for a response now.

That was with http://www.transportdirect.info/TransportDirect/en/JourneyPlanning/JourneyPlannerInput.aspx

There is a paragraph "The fuel costs are approximate and may vary by 50% or more depending on factors such as weather, driving style, high congestion levels, number of passengers and tyre pressures. We assume you have a medium sized petrol-engined car unless you have specified your own values for car size and fuel type or fuel consumption on the car details input pages."

From this is sounds as if it has to be her own car. Why can't the website be clear.!! Cost was £19.50, which sounds cheap from Manchester to Cambridge.

I would have thought a bus would have gone from Manchester to Stansted airport, then just jump on the train to Cambridge.

Not a clue about the bus costs but the train will cost £8.00 from Stansted to Cambs and take about 40mins.

Great idea! I told her before if she would have flown to Stansted i would have picked her up. Now i just have to see if i can find a bus from Manchester Airport/Area to Stansted Airport. If anyone can help i would be most grateful. She will be too ;)

There's a National express coach... but it departs at 6pm and gets to Stanstead at 0.22am!! It's £39 btw.

Any way she can fly into Stansted instead, much closer than Manchester?

Check availability of trains etc. on Boxing Day there will be a "very" limited service I would imagine
