Best Way To Install Linux

No, all I have related to drivers under system > administration is hardware drivers. But that produces an empty white box.

I downloaded the ATI drivers suggested but when I opened the file in 'gedit' it states that the character coding cannot be detected?

Not really having a very good experience with Linux so far!

Thanks for the help!

Gedit is just a basic text editor... you'd need to ask somebody more experienced but don't you need to open it in the package Manager.

Yer, im pretty sure a .run is a pre-compiled setup binary. You will need to make it executable chmod +x thefile.run, then execute it ./thefile.run and it will install. I don't think you can get these files to interact with the package manager, it will most likely be an independent installation.

TOMO - System > Administration > Hardware Drivers

It will search for drivers, if it doesn't find any it's because you ATI card hasn't got a "ubuntu driver" yet.

You will have to install the ati linux drivers off ther ati site manually. As per this guide:

Just remember ATI drivers are often rubish, this isn't the fault of Ubuntu it's ATI, thats why most of us own Nvidia cards who use linux :p

Finally managed to get it working.

Post 9 on this page helped me out a lot.

Now it seems the next problem to solve is to get my Microsoft Wireless keyboard 3000 to work. Have to really press down on the keys to get it to type anything!

Thanks for all the advice, really appreciated.

That just sounds like a problem with your keyboard does it not?

Downloading Ubuntu through Wubi at the moment.

Last time I tried Linux I had no idea how to get my wireless adapter to work! It's a inventel ur054g that came with my Livebox from Wanadoo (now orange)

Has anybody had any experience with this adapater in the past, or does anybody know how to get it working?

Thanks :)
