Best way to learn about cars?

What's a D16 Civic? D16 refers to an engine code not the model of the car..... and even if the donor car is cheap, turbocharging one effectively is not. The OP knows NOTHING about cars, he is not going to start by turbocharging an N/A engine.

erm I know d16 is the engine code. I meant a d16 based civic. Turbocharging is quite easy on a civic and will teach you a lot, and can be done with basic junkyard parts. d16 is perfect for boost.

Find out if there is a local college that does a basic car maintanence course - one round the corner does an eight week course for £60 - 1.5hrs every Thursday evening. Teach you thinks like how to change a battery, brake discs and pads, exhausts etc - by the end of it you'll be better trained than the average kwik Fit mechanic. Plus you use all there tools/old banger so there is nothing else to fork out for whilst your learning.

Actually that's a bloody good idea. I might do this.

Headgasket?

ie. don't buy a Rover :)

Only a hard job if you're a **** :p

A headgasket job teaches you loads about the internal workings of an engine, of course different to standard maintainence (OK, it is standard maintainence on a K series engine...) but always good to know.

I want to learn more, but now I've got the 420 running sweet don't really want to break it again.

Onto Autotrader I go!

My ex-gf's friends dad owned a garage (autoelectrician) and I had some free time on saturdays - pestered him to help out there on the weekends and then ended up spending holidays and all my free time there due to it being a right laugh :)
Learned a hell of a lot in mechanical skills and brew making skills :) Also got pushed into buying a scooter off his daughter at 18 which led to me taking my full licence the week I turned 21 :D

The D16 fault? What do you mean?

I was a bit tipsy last night and may have exaggerated the ease of turbocharging it lol, but it really is much easier in comparison with other cars. Especially because you can mod the stock ECU and it takes a wideband o2 sensor signal no probs and hook your laptop up to it and tune it yourself. OBD1 honda ecus rule

By engine code I presumed an error code from the ECU - D16 being a common fault. Obviously I'm wrong. Like I say, I know very little about cars so I don't even know what turbocharging is let alone be able to do it!

I'm still keeping my eye out for a project car. Looking at retro rides forum now (I think thats what lopez was trying to link me to?)

just run around in an oldish ford and fix things when they break?

i've got no memory of working on cars but even now they don't hold any concern for me. i've changed head gasket on xr2, fitted tow bar to escort, repaired another escort. i've never had a car fail an mot apparently as i've looked after them and fixed what i need to.

Nah I've got my new focus to drive as my main car, but I'm now itching to start a project car. I'm so indecisive, so until I get some sort of unanimous vote of which car, I'll be hesitating and annoying people here in this forum!

D16 is the engine code that identifies it. D is the series (all single cam except for 1 exception), and 16 stands for the displacement (1.6).

If you know absolutely nothing about cars then any car is good to start on. I'm just partial to Hondas as the engines are very strong, reliable, easy to maintain, easy to work on, respond well to mods, and relatively cheap....also the aftermarket for them is HUUGGEE.
