Hi guys, I have purchased a new samsung 840 SSD and noticed people clone their old boot drives onto their new ssd's, my new drive came with samsungs own data migration software which looks good but it seems it requires a usb cable to plug into the ssd, which, naturally it didnt come with. For some stupid reason it only seems to work with a sata to usb cable, is this the case?

Is there any other software you can recommend that'll do a good job cloning with the drive connected internally via sata or if not is there a specific sata to usb adaptor I need?

another quickie, I see people update the firmware on their ssd's, is there a cable I need for that or can that be done internally? Is it recommended? I never knew I'd have so many questions regarding ssd's! I thought they would just be like any other HDD (just plug the damn thing in) :p

thanx all!

I like the Paragon SSD Migration tool, Got a free license in a promotion a few years ago.

Other than that have you tried plugging the SSD in on a free SATA port and using Samsungs tool? I'd be very surprised if it didn't let you. Any 2.5" SATA to USB caddy will work though. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-012-AK&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72

The Samsung Magician windows utility lets you update firmware easily, just click a button and reboot.

Myself I'd update the firmware first, then do a full reinstall. There's nothing like a reinstall to keep things running crisp.
