Hi

I have an old 2003 server which is starting to show it's age. If I was to build a new server and installed 2003, what is the best way to take everything from one to the other? (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Data etc).

I'd just do a simple DCPROMO to make it a domain controller then migrate any FSMO Roles that the old server holds and then demote the other server back to being a normal member server. Add it as a secondary DHCP and DNS Server and then remove the services from the old one. finally i'd replicate the data (shares) I assume and then over night I'd do a final update of the new shares before powering off the old server and putting in a DNS alias pointing to the new server.

Virtualisation is an option but if you only have a couple of servers it's almost certainly not worththe cost and extra level of complication.

Thats the way I've always done it. Probably the most painless and also gives the option of going back if things go wrong.

Sorry but what the original post mean't to say was to migrate from server 2003 to small business server 2003. Would that still be done the same way?

Cheers

Sorry to come back to this but does anyone know where there is a good free guide explaining the steps involved migrating from server 2003 to SBS 2003?

Cheers
