Best way to over clock my CPU?

I'm getting a new system soon but for now I really want to overclock my AMD FX 4100 as it is really the worse part of my set up.

What are the best programs and ways to overclock, a step by step guide would be great as I can't find the option to self increase the multiplayer in AMD Overdrive... I can only seem to overclock after running a test and applying that test. (e.g. last safe clock was 4.4.ghz) The problem here is that when I apply that clock it isn't safe as the screen goes blank before the test ends and I'm actually applying an unstable clock.

I really don't want to use the Auto Overclock on the motherboard as it doesn't even touch my GPU. I can overclock the GPU safely way higher than this auto clock does.... the auto clock takes me from 3.6GHz-3.8GHz which I think is poor and surely I could get around 4GHz if not higher?

Just want to add I have a artic cooler on the CPU and 4 Thermaltake Fans in a NZXT case

I've had a read mate

I think tonight I'm going to try change the settings in the bios rather than in the AMD Overdrive software and see if that makes a difference
