Are you using VATS?
Are you picking up stuff of value from shelves or dead people to sell or trade for bullets?
Are you doing quests to earn money?

Things like a carton of cigs is worth quite a bit of money you can use to buy ammo.
When looting look at the weight vs value, if the weight is 1 and the value is 1 leave it, but if the weight is 2 and the value is 50 pick it up

i have been picking up stuff alogn the way, but i didnt see the weight bit before ill take note of that from now on. im trying to use the vats system, but it doesnt seem to be that effective with the weapons ive got so far.
i guess i should trawl back over the areas ive been to already and go searchign for things to sell then, taking into account the weight now?

The game is hard at first but then it gets very easy once you understand how everything works. I'm thinking of playing it again now, this time I will be a bad guy haaahaaa :P

Yeah the vanilla game is really easy. Once you've got to grips with it, the only hard part is getting started purely because dogs are lethal and your guns are worthless. General way to play is to max Repair asap and grab the +10 bobblehead from Arefu, that gives you plentiful cash just repairing Raider armours and flogging em.

VATS is better to use after you've engaged. The vanilla system was horrible in that its max engagement rage was pitiful and at that max range your accuracy was even more pitiful, much better in closer quarters, also avoid using it with Shotguns...

Oh it's easy

Walk to the aircraft hanger, the town in the bomb crater and the hotel tower. Then just go about robbing, murdering and collecting until you have semi-decent equipment.

This is so you can get past the super-mutants that guard the outcast base,

Then complete the Operation Anchorage mission which gives you a bucket of tech and sellable items.

I just jumped back and forth between the outcast base and the traders robbing them blind. Even killed them all and took all the armour.

At the end of it all you have massive head start on the game.

As for mods The MUST HAVE mod is the music mod from FalloutNexus. It adds about 100 songs to the playlist.

I really want to go home and play this again now, I've found the best bet is to follow the wasteland survival guide for a bit then go to Arefu, cut a deal with the vampire dudes and collect blood packs for cash.

I regret playing some of the dlc with a developed character, I went into the pit with very high skills in unarmed and hand weapons and pretty much beat the hell out of every bad guy and took their weapons off them. It was all too easy and easy isn't really fun.

Wish I'd started over and gone in about Lvl 8, then I would have actually had to play properly.

I suppose I'm saying that if you finish too much of the original content, then you might not get the best out of the DLC, Play the game twice 1st game to do the main game, 2nd character for the DLC.

I'm playing through my 1st play through, stick with it OP. I found this game a bit tricky at lower levels. Now I am around level 16 or so the game seems much easier as I know what I am doing a bit and have got much better weapon skills.

Enjoying this I don't own GOTY version so might have to buy the DLC of GFWL (shudder).

Meh, thats vanilla for you. FWE and MMM saw to that, especially when you increase the number of spawns.

is there any way to tell if the area youre in is too hard for your level, ie. you shouldnt be there? ive just stuck to the main quests and gone through the radio station etc but im lvl6

You should probably get to around level 10 before you bother fighting the Super Mutants in the DC Ruins because there's so many of them. But the enemies in the game evolve while you evolve, they have a levelling system as well as you. Certain enemies only show up when you reach a certain level and they'll follow your level progress by levelling up themselves, in theory this means the game is never unfair but I swear I've seen Giant Radscorpions when I was a low level.

I only did the main quests and completed at about lvl12, normally if i went somewhere i shouldn't would die pretty quickly but even by about level 10 unless i hit a group of raiders or a large group of supermutants I was fine.

EDIT^. DC ruins i did way before level 10, just use the trenches to get them one at a time then run to the Brotherhood who will finish any lingering ones off. The first group near the station use the statue in the middle for cover.

EDIT2. Got a feeling its a tree not a statue

gotta agree with the posts so far, very early game is a bit tricky untill you can scavenge your way to some better armour, weapons and ammo.

its not the easiest game to get into, but persist with it and you will be rewarded with one of the most immersive and addictive games i have had the fortune to play. it gets easier later on, but no less interesting.

i found the combat shotgun (indoor & close range) & hunting rifle used in VATS very useful in the early game, with an assault rifle handy to keeping putting fire on multiple enemys if you need to move quickly.

there's plenty of great advice out there as the game is so popular, but my advice would be just dive in, most of the fun for me was exploring.

P.S. I played the GOTY without doing Zeta, is it worth reinstalling & dragging over the save games from my old HD just for this?

No. Weakest and least original expansion. Moderately useful if you specialise in energy weapons, but only moderately.

Meh, equipment has a much bigger effect. Course a high Sneak makes all the difference in the world, but its about the only thing. Doesn't matter what your small guns is (within reason) on vanilla, if you have the Lincolns Repeater or Ol' Painless your shots don't spread and sniping is far easier than with the useless Sniper Rifles. All you need is a decent Repair stat so your guns don't suck.

That said, damage taken and dealt is far too low on vanilla. Assault Rifles are only useful for killing things that you don't want to waste shotgun ammo on or don't want to headshot with a Hunting Rifle before it even saw you. Sneak headshot multiplier renders almost every other weapon obsolete.
