Best way to proceed with upgrade/JB iPhone 4

im sorry but who ever siad the hosts was wrong is wrong it works and verifys allows it to be boot up and work..

you should not have gone to 4.3.5...

It's a bit too late for that now lol.

@Guru, you do have the blobs for 4.1! Get the 4.1 firmware and make a custom firmware for that and point the host file to cydia! it should work as you have them saved on Cydia servers.

I had no way to get to 4.3.3 no blobs.

Can't figure out how to get 4.2.1 even with the blobs tho :(

Tried what Mr Bell said but it says the ipsw is invalid when I try to do the custom signed rom.
 
Back on 4.1 now, but I've got to re-install all the important things like activator :(

Had hoped it would have been backed up but no such luck. It kept all my bookmarks and tomtom favourites etc, but nothing that came from Cydia like emulators etc etc.
 
I think this is being wayyyyy over complicated as far as I can see and no need for a custom IPSW.

Firstly ensure your hosts file has "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" in there

Download say 4.2.1 as you have the blobs for that saved on Cydia servers.
Hold down alt (mac) or shift (windows) and click on restore
Point that to the 4.2.1 IPSW

Should be it as far as I can see? Validation will pass from Cydia's servers as the blobs are there?

Then jailbreak with redsn0w

EDIT: Too slow :p

EDIT 2: iTunes won't backup Cydia data for you, need a program like pkgbackup to do that for you
 
@PaulyD, the problem is right when it comes to booting a lot of people receive and error like myself I could not come out of recovery mode and wanted me to connect it to iTunes regardless of what method I use to come out of boot.

A custom firmware resolves this. (It did for me anyway) and it also depends if your using OSX or Windows to how the custom boot is created.

Never had a problem with that myself even when jumping down firmware versions when i had the shsh blobs saved on Cydia, never needed to use a custom IPSW either.
 
I really appreciate the advice, but I did try all of that first, the problem is that my 4.2.1 download is not working to restore. I tried without custom ipsw. I couldn't try with one because it said that the ipsw wasn't valid.
 
No problem mate, I can only give my own advice and never had a problem with it myself unless I have been quite lucky :)

Glad your back on 4.1 now at least

I should have said.... I have downloaded it 4 times from 4 separate locations to two completely different PCs both with the same results :(

I was reading somewhere that you can only do it with the beta version of 4.2.1 but don't know if there is any truth in that or how I could get hold of it anyways.

The main thing I wanted to achieve was to get an app working to search for tracks on the built in spotify on my AV receiver. I have subsequently found a different app that is working fine :)

oh now more ....

there is a problem and its using multi core cpu's so you need to use just one core then try it...

if using redsnow etc .. right click it before opening in task manager go to select affinity and choose one core...

thats under windows (spits) as this was a apple forum i assumed you were using a mac (which you dont need to do this)

try that....
