Hi all I'd like to record some game footage, preferably at 1080 at up to 60fps.
I've read about afterburner and fraps, but they seem a bit limited... anything else worth considering that's free or very cheap? Bonus for fps/system performance overlay.

Thanks

Yeah, if you're running a 480 then AMD ReLive should be a good option.

OBS is very good indeed but can take a while to get acquainted with.

best to go on youtube and just watch some videos. fraps still takes some beating. if done right and rendered right to get good quality. doesnt matter how good video footage you get if its rendered wrongly.

there is a few free options like obs , shadowplay ( nvidia) amd Relive.

You don't say what operating system you use. I just use Windows 10. Works fine so far - providing you can keep a locked 30 or 60fps. If there's any frame dips, it results in stutter in the video.

OBS is the way to go, can take a bit of configuration but very flexible and a doddle to use. Also handy if you have multiple audio sources etc.

Other than that I'd go for the GPU manufacturers solution as they tend to over ones which work well. Only downside to them is the likes of Shadowplay (nvidia) can introduce audio lag on long recordings as it uses variable bit rate on MP4s. Not had that issue with OBS.

Dont shout at me but I tried OBS and found Windows 10 Game DVR to be actually superior and it does 60fps. I tried OBS on my sons laptop with an internal and external webcam and I found it to struggle at smooth 60fps even 30fps despite watching vids and using recommended settings. It was a bit annoying.

I then thought lets try the Windows 10 DVR worth a punt, set it to 60fps, used my Logitech C920 and despite the file sizes being large it produced good smooth fluid videos.

Just a tip if you edit using Adobe Premiere it doesnt like videos encoded with VBR the audio ends out of sync by the end. So as the Logitech C920 uses VBR I then just re-encode with audio pass through using CBR on Handbrake and when I overlay the webcam with the game footage its in perfect sync.

Only downside to them is the likes of Shadowplay (nvidia) can introduce audio lag on long recordings as it uses variable bit rate on MP4s.

+1

One of the reasons I usually avoid ShadowPlay these days as so often the audio becomes out of sync with the video. Variable bit rate being the problem, iirc.
