Local capture has no effect on refresh rate.
Unfortunately, doesnt seem the case for me - cant achieve 120hz with Fraps running. Ill give dxtory a go, i assume you tried it with a 120hz monitor?

i think there's a misunderstanding between refresh rate and frame rate. doing anything wont affect the refresh rate of the TV, but the game will run a lot slower if you're recording on the same PC as you're playing unless you've got an i7 and are using the tiniest graphics card in the universe
No misunderstanding on my end, I am talking about the visual screen display rate - hertz.
Have you tried a 120hz Monitor before?

You don't know what refresh rate is then or how it interacts with the system.
Local capture has absolutely no effect on the refresh rate of your system, be it delivered by the GPU or displayed by the monitor.
60Hz, 120Hz, 200Hz, 75Hz. Will all be 60, 120, 200 and 75 respectively when recording or not.
Has anyone actually tried to record FRAPS whilst running 120hz?
Why would it be an issue? It's irrelevant really, you wont get the best benefit from 120Hz with lowered frame rates but it has zero impact on recording game play.
Does anyone know of a good codec I can use with this? I've been using loads of configs with the default DxTory one and i've also tried Lagarith Lossless Codec but the file sizes are huge. By huge I mean bigger than FRAPS.
I'm recording at 1280 x 720 and 60 FPS, i'd appreciate if someone linked me to something that keeps crystal clear quality (if possible) but lowers the size of the file down.
Can anyone give me feedback on this?
My first attempt at 1440p encoding and uploading to Youtube -

And hints and/or tips on better rendering settings would be appreciated. Recorded using MSI Afterburner, MJPEG at full frame 100% quality and rendered in Sony Vegas 12.
Thanks for the reply.
I'll certainly give DXtory a try tomorrow. I was put off as I was told it's a pain to setup initially but that could just be misinformation.
What would you recommend instead of Vegas?
nothing vegas is very very good if you know how to use it.
