Best way to set up an external PCIE x1?

I have an internal soundcard, the Creative X-Fi Titanium HD, that normally connects to a PCIE x1 port. I want to free up some space in my case, so I was thinking of using it externally. What's the best way of doing this?

Would a PCIE x1 extender cable be a good idea? Would it affect latency or throughput?

I know that there is dedicated forum for sound cards, but I thought of asking here because of the general nature of the PCIE x1 port.

Only way to find out is to try - X-Fis are a bit sensitive to their operating conditions and bus latency though - which can result in boot loops or sound cutting out so probably not a good idea.

Can I just ask what you are freeing up space for ? How are you going to prevent accidentally touching the card/shorting it and possible issue of static electricity ?

I have a 2.5-slot graphics card that's a little too close to the sound card, which is obstructing the airflow. The sound card is almost completely covered by a plastic case. The only thing missing is a backplate, so it still can't be handled like a real external sound card, but I haven't yet decided what to do about that.

I switched to HDMI audio. It is 7.1 for all videocards from last 5+ generations (currently wait for RMA my vid and temporary using Radeon 5450; oh boy, this creep can't fill WQHD but have 7.1 sound over HDMI with few Dolby corrections supported)
Of course, it was not intended but side effect of me purchasing a musical audio system to replace the computer speakers.
But your soundcard somehow implies in me the belief, that your speakers are also something for music. If they have any digital input, maybe you can try HDMI-to-that adapter cable and hear for yourself.
The bad part is - now I can't sleep the videocard and the monitor, have to turn it off manually.
But if it is ok for you - just sell the blaster.

Alternatively, you may press the drama button and try something like this

riser cables are cheap online, try it but use the shortest possible cable, lord knows how to secure it in the case though and still access the sockets
