Hi guys.

Current setup is an Asus Xonar D2X which is connected to Eidifer 2.0 speakers. I also have a Sennheiser headset via USB. Now to switch between the two, I need to into Windows Sound properties and change the audio device. This isn't ideal as some apps require a restart after I do this (iTunes being one!).

How do I best do this? Can I connect both the speakers and the headset to some form of junction box and switch between them? I'm interested in not losing any SQ or effects and I want to switch between speakers and headset quickly without faffing around.

Yeah, plug your mic and headset into the sound card directly, don't use the USB at all. Use the dolby headphone on the sound card to get the surround effects.

Sorry, forgot about your speakers!! Plug the headphones and mic into the front panel.

D2/D2X doesn't have a front audio connector. You'll need some kind of switch box. 3.5mm cable splitters are an option, but are far from ideal.

I don't think there are any programs that can do this. Even if there were, surely you'd still need to reboot if there programs you are currently using that require a reboot.

A switch box is obviously the cheapest option, but there isn't a wealth of them available that have 3.5mm connections. Something like This is as good as you're going to get really. As long as it works though, that's what matters really.

If you'd rather buy a new sound card though, then a Creative SB Z, might be a good option. Has connections for headphones and speakers on the card itself. You could go for a Xonar DX, but the problem with using front audio on a PC case, is the possibility of interference or ground loop issues. It's a common problem, and would defeat the purpose of buying a new card for the front audio connection, should there be any issues.
