So, with the whole openSSL issue and everyone being advised to update their passwords for everything, I figured this is finally a good reason to stop myself being lazy and actually get around to doing something secure like using keypass.

What's the best option for using on both windows and android? Ideally free, but if I have to pay a small amount for the smartphone convenience then that wouldn't be the end of the world.

Though how do they work? I assume I have something installed locally that I enter my account password into, and then it just automatically enters my password for me in any website I visit?

1Password

I don't know of a free solution, they're all paid for unfortunately.

They all work in a similar fashion, you open up the app, enter a master password and then it lists all your saved passwords and usernames. Simply copy them and paste them where you need them.

While some may scoff at having the archive in the cloud, I'm content enough to have my Keepass database on Dropbox, letting me use my database on all my devices. ChromeIPass connected to my Keepass database on my desktops and KeePassDroid for my phone.

All free if you don't have a paying subscription to Dropbox, though still cheap if you do. :)

Thanks for the replies guys, gone with Keepass for now.

KIA, do you mean just using a key file instead of a password? Is that secure enough?

I've begun setting it up and everything seems to be working so far with transitioning things over. One question for android though. Is there a way to integrate it into the browsers? I'm now using KeeFox for firefox which automatically integrates with keepass to enter the login info automatically, but is there anything similar for the mobile browsers? Or will I have to open up keepass and copy the password to the clipboard when I want to log into any sites?

Key file is normally used with a password, so you need the key file on any device you use, plus the password. If you upload your database to the likes of Dropbox, then it's good idea not to upload the key file - just do it manually, as it doesn't change like the database does.

As for auto-password entry, I don't know if anything else does it, but yeah, I think KeePassDroid needs the username and password copied and pasted. :(
