Best/Worst/Current Diesel Engine

Current, Best and Only, the 1.6 CRDi in my Hyundai I30. I actually genuinely love the thing. For a cheap and practical car, it has loads of power and a nice roar to it.

Had one of these as a hire car; was suitably disappointed when it arrived but did 1000 miles in 2 days in it (Stoke to Banff back and a bit of running around) and was very impressed.

Worst for me has to be the Mercedes 2.2 litre unit, noisey and unrefined even in the high power variants.

Best for me was Honda 2.2 unit; still a crummy 4 pot diesel but not spent any time in a modern 6/8 cylinder.

Current is a 2.0tdci; it's nasty but it's average for a 4 pot diesel of that vintage imho.

EDIT, if counting vans the god awful 1.8 tdci has to have a special mention. Ancient design zero power poor economy (average 34mpg in an unloaded connect, get 40mpg+ out of a proper transit) and lots of noise.

Had a Volvo xc60 d3 and xc70 d3/4 as hire cars for a few days. They are probably OK for people with no particular interest in cars but I found them rough and noisy. Stepping back into my 03 plate T5 was li,ke getting into a roller by comparison.
