Righty ho.. 6 points in 4 months has me thinking that I need to a) slow down and b) get a radar detector...

And before any do-gooder trashes the thread with a lecture I do in excess of 50k a year and haven't had an accident for 10 years (and I'm only 28, I plead idiocy when I was 18 :)) I consider myself pretty safe.

For example the latest lot were on the A417 nr Gloucester, an arrow straight dual carriageway with not a single house on it and I ws snapped doing 85 when I should have been doing 70.. big bloody deal. Where I live is a bit of a rat run between 2 sets of lights, every other house has a couple of kids and people drive down there at rush hour like total ********* and never a single copper to be seen

Anyway.. whats the best ever radar detector? I'm not interested in gatsos/specs etc, I'm not a moron I look where I'm driving, I want some sort of help against these godforsaken camera vans.

Please! before I daydream my way into being banned!

Just get a TomTom and download the data of Pocketgps. This shows you where all the scamera vans operate and give you a warning. Just keep it updated. It's probably not 100% perfect but it knows where all the "usual" places are around my area. :)

They use laser now dont they and that works 1/4 of a mile away. A detector would just tell you after the fact

Origin B2 Solo is suppoed to be the best and there is more information about this at the bottom of the sticky.

The B2 Solo has a laser diffuser option but they are illegal in this country.

i think its the "its a clear road so i wanna do >70" attitude that you need to work on, not buying a radar detector. i know i know its not what you wanted to hear lol

Yea, did you know that every time you do over 70 on a clear road, god kills a kitten?

PLEASE, THINK OF THE KITTENS.

Its them damn lasers you have to worry about. By the time your £300 piece of kit has decided that yes there is infact a laser being pointed at your car the guy standing behind it has already got your speed displayed infront of him :(

The only thing i've found of any use at all for roads I don't know is Tom Tom with the speed camera database loaded in. I've got it set up to give me two different warnings. One for fixed cameras and another for mobile camera sites.

Its true what you say though, Mr A who does 50k a year is far more likely to get points and subsequently lose his licence than Mr B who only does 10k... and which one of the two is most likely to be out of a job if they get a hefty ban :(

Origin B2, GPS gatso and laser detector.

Even if the laser is on you it might be a second or two before the operator takes a picture - could be the difference between doing 90mph and 80 mph!

oh shush.

The law is supposed to be decided by concensus, that's the whole point, it's the armoury the masses have against the indescretion of the miority.. so why is it projected that in a couple of years the majority of the driving population will have been convicted for speeding?

Just don't get me started, I wouldn't even mind if it were a £300 fine and they stayed on your licence for a year. Or a weeks ban every time you got caught.. or a dirty great fine for speeding where there's not supposed to be people walking and heavier punishment for where there is supposed to be people.

The time they stick around gives you time to regret, repent, forget and get caught again.. its a bloody nonsense and like I said built up areas fine (notice me not complaining about the first lot? I was caught doing 37 in a 30 it was stupid, I know it was and I stick to 30 religiously now, really not proud of that at all).

Anyways, I have a navman, can I download these sites for that or would I need to get a tomtom?

Officer, my laser blocker actually opens my garage door!

(its worked before!)

Plus the majority of scammera vans are civilian run and they have no actual police powers, so they couldnt pull you over anyway!

Cheap units have been crap in the past. The database tends to be poor so I think if you are going to buy one then save for the Origin B2.

As most people have said, once a detector has picked up a laser signal it means you have been zapped. Occasionally you can get lucky and pickup laser scatter if you are coming round a corner but it is reasonably hard to do. The only true way to save your license unfortunately is either stick to the limit or use a laser jammer but this is definately not advisable. :( No amount of detectors and/or databases will stop Mr. Plod.

oh arse..

You ought to get credits based on the amount you drive.. I need to ditch the company car and get a new one with cruise control.

I wonder if you can spec a focus ST with cruise???
