My second computer is running 7800GS AGP and 2GB RAM but the CPU is only XP2600+ clocked @ 2.0Ghz. What's the best processor to stick in there to give things a kick?

Fastest you can get is a Barton 3200+

But you need DDR 400 RAM to run it and a mobo that can do 400FSB
I'm certain that's what's in there so that should be OK. In fact it's definitely 400FSB because the clock is 200@10 and it's got DDR RAM. I've just sniffed about and it appears that people are paying fairly big money for these CPU's. Ouch!

Yeah they do seem to fetch silly prices, maybe a cheaper alternative is a Barton 2500+ as these were well known for running at 3200+ speeds, all you had to do is change the FSB from 166 to 200

What motherboard does it have?

Def best to get a mobile as they go for about half the price of a xp3200, clock much better and remain cooler in the process.

Motherboard is Asus A7N8X-X NForce2 400. The current XP2600 is at 200@10 and sits underneath a massive Thermaltake cooler. It runs OK at 200@12 but get the odd blue screen so I leave it at 200@10 for rock solid use. I've been out the O/C loop a while so wouldn't go messing with volts or RAM timings too much but if the mobile processor can go better than 200@12 on air and still stable I'll probs go for that. However, the market for these processors is shocking. People are paying over £50 on some other website.

Mobile AthlonXP-M 2500+ is very popular.
The multi is unlocked upwards on the M version, was the E6300 of its day.
I have 2500 Barton and a 2500 Barton M in systems and they are great chips.

Saw an xp3200 go for £91 including postage just last week!! Lots of fakes about too due to price they fetch.

Mobile def capable of doing better than 200x12 on air and staying at comfortable temps with a decent cooler.

Have a look over at socketaplus forum where there is quite a few of us still using these chips. Plenty of helps and tips there.

There is also the trusty XP-1700 (DL3TC flavour). Mine ran @ 2.5 all day for about a year. a helluva lot cheaper to pick up than a native 200FSB AXP.

cheapest (and best imo) option might be to grab a second hand A64 and AGP board

Athlon XP's are going for more than low end A64's now so i recon you could do that without spending a penny (after selling yours)

without a doubt, 2500-m or 2600-m if you can get one. i managed to pick up a 2600-m with one of the best steppings (IQYHA 0352MPMW) a while ago on egay for about £50. expensive for what it is really and considering what was available at the time too with A64's etc

last time I used it i got it stable at 250x10 on water with a dfi NF2 infinity and some BH-5 mem but have since ran out of time to mess, so its all sitting in my garage in pieces.

one day i may restart the project :)

I remember there being some Socket A Semprons, the top end one of those is probably the fastest. I guess it would need a BIOS update though.

Socket A Semprons, were, IIRC, just re-branded T-bred B CPU's. Get a known Clocking 1700, clock the nut's off it, and enjoy. For a lot less than a native 400FSB part I might add.

Do this. A64 is much better than socket A, more headroom for overclocking, true dual channel memory, 64bit, SSE2, SSE3 (if its a venice/SD chip). Also gives you the option of an X2 if you want to upgrade in future too. Ideally get an ASRock Dual sata2 to have the option of PCI-e in future also.
