I ummed and ahhed about whether this was worthy of it's own thread, but since it isn't a question about AV it made less sense to tack it onto the end of the sticky. I'm sure it will get moved if the mods disagree.

Anyway a beta of the popular MSE software is available:

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/...rosoft-security-essentials-now-available.aspx

New in this version:

  • Windows Firewall integration – During setup, Microsoft Security Essentials will now ask if you would like to turn the Windows Firewall on or off.
  • Enhanced protection for web-based threats – Microsoft Security Essentials now integrates with Internet Explorer to provide protection against web-based threats.
  • New protection engine – The updated anti-malware engine offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities with better performance.
  • Network inspection system* – Protection against network-based exploits is now built in to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Welcome additions or do they risk bloating an otherwise lightweight solution? Anybody have the beta already?

I wonder if the large folder DISK I/O/CPU hog bug still remains....I am in the BETA program but the download servers are failing at present.

MSE is okay but is quite slow I find, so if they fix that and add some new features / improve detection as well then its all good.

Downloaded and installed and the CPU and Disk I/O bug when browsing to large folders in Explorer STILL exists.

No surprise there because this bug has been reported to MS ever since MSE has been around.

Don't bother with MSE if you have large directory structures with a lot of zip/executables in there.

I was supposed to post a thread on this yesterday but forgot lol

After installing it I kinda felt it's not something that I'm likely to ever use & kinda felt it was a little pointless :-/

When you uninstall MSE it turns on Windows Defender too. Which is a bit annoying.

I know you've always said about this bug, but personally, I don't ever get this problem, the only folders I browse now are Steam dir (which I've added as an exception to the scanning), and my Movies / Music / Photos

For me, it all works hunky-dory

Music/Movies/Photos are scanned effortlessly quickly as they don't contain files with executable code. It's only my software folder which takes absolutely ages (confirmed by others on the MS social technet forum as well as betaplace).

My software backup folder is 15.1GB and is shared with all LAN users and if they were to be using MSE as well they'd see even slower performance.

This is most definitely an issue and I guess because it only affects a minority of people (the average user is not going to have folders of this size containing these types of files) that they haven't bothered to put time into resolving it.

MSE does not have power users in mind I guess :/

Wonder if it will integrate with Firefox for checking web based threats too? I use Avast at present and don't even notice it running :)

It always has done IIRC but just browse that celeb walpaper site for a bit and if nothing pops up in MSE then it probably isn't doing it right :p
