Beta Tests for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe software!

 Grr no invite for me!! :D I guess ill join when the qore lot do in a few weeks, the Socom one starts in a couple of weeks too, so i can at least try that out for a bit. :)

the posts on the official forum are a joke, they get thousands of people to play the game and let them know just how broke it is, for free, i'm pretty sure beta testing used to be a paid job and nowadays devs get thousands of hours of testing for free and moan just because a few people want to discuss the title they have.

can't believe the op on the sony forum says how "extremely fortunate" these people are. "remember you are doing an important job, having fun is just an extra" - excuse me but if its so important why don't they spend some of that $10m marketing budget on creating a game that works and doesn't require an infinite number of patches just to play the bloody thing.

personally i'd tell them to shove it.

er ok:p
Thats the point of beta testing to iron out the "infinite" number of bugs so they dont need an infinte amount of patches lol. They are doing a job, an important one, to make sure when the game is out its pretty much bug free. PC games have used this method for years, and now console games require a large amount of MP testing to check servers/lag/match making etc etc so its a big part of many large scale MP games.

It's probably also quite hard for an in-house team to ensure the network code will work well for Granny Boggins in darkest Cornwall, when she's playing against her grandson in Cuba, along with 58 other players across the world.

You've just summed up in your post exactly why beta testing is no longer a paid job - people want to and will do it for free, so surely it's the logical thing to do for developers.

Beta testing has become a public affair these days simply because it is so easy to distribute media, back in the day it would have to be done in a controlled environment simply because it wasn't very easy to send the constantly updated builds of a game to everyone as we were all stuck on slow 56k modems. These days they can just chuck out an update every so often and people can download it in minutes. This also means they can get it out to a far larger proportion of willing testers who get enjoyment out of doing it and thus more bugs will be found and removed before release.

It's a win, win, win situation for the developers, the people who WANT to beta test and the consumer.
