Bets set up for Uni

For me a laptop would have been completely useless. I have a PC and a PDA.

PC= Gaming and programming.
PDA= Phoning and mobile tinternet.

- i spoke to my brother today (no offence but i'l listen to him more) .. he basically said (as many of you have said) he didnt really use his laptop except in his room, and anytime he used it outside was very basic programs.

- I'm interested in the PDA route, however i've got a ipod touch, so i just hope apple give us an external keyboard by next year.

- and superewza, any money i don't spend, i'l save, i don't really plan on spending any more money on the computer...

TBH best bet is to buy a £100 laptop 2nd hand. That will be more than powerfull for word processing, excel charts and anything you need to do coursework wise. (unless you know you need certain software). Then spend the rest on a desktop. If you think you'll get fed of lugging a huge case around a few times a year. Then go mATX. But if your not bothered about the few times you'll lug it around then go normal.

im not that bothered about price for a portable device to be honest... however what peopel have said is that the size of a laptop makes it inconvinient.... i'm going to have a peek at some pda's and some of the umpc's...

a 15" will fit in most laptop bags, which also have enough room for books.

A pda is not going to be any good for writing up reports, or notes from the library. You aren't going to be using a laptop all the time. Only around coursework time. Where you'll need to use the uni resources.

actually yeh a second hand lappy isnt a bad idea...

- some of the netbooks are down the £200-£250 range, and presumerably next june this price range will have some better specs in... so i think that might be a decent choice

Amp34-- Is it the size or the fact its hard to move about?.. > Would a case with handles make it any easier?

Size and weight, tbh I wouldn't have thought handles would make much difference.

I was in the same situation as yourself in year one of uni. I bought a 15" laptop (acer) and it weighed 2.5KG. Travelling into london everyday on the tube + uni books was killing me so I sold it and bought a netbook.

Can't recommend enough the samsung nc10, there are even better options now the NC20 etc. Weighs nothing, battery lasts 6+ hours, usually 8 for me with wifi on.

That's why I suggested a 13" laptop, lighter than a 15" laptop and easily fitting inside most bag (15" laptops seem to always need a specific laptop bag). They don't weight much more than a netbook either, but are a lot more powerful.:)

All the people I knew used their laptops a lot in their rooms, however they all took them to the library too (you also have the communal aspect, you can "work" in the living room with your friends), especially in their second and third years. That is why I suggested both a Desktop and a laptop, as laptops just aren't as good as desktops. However maybe just take your desktop with you and see how you feel a couple of months into your course. You may never go to the library, or alternatively you may wish you had a laptop.:)

The only problem with going small is that yes it seems to become more expensive, and your choice is limited, however small really is better if you also have a desktop.:p

amp34-- i havnt been able to find a 13" laptop under £500ish... it seems you pay more for having a smaller lappy...

-- yes i think i should opt for some sort of lap/netbook, as the communal aspect you mentioned... i don't particularly want to be restricted to my room when im studying..

-- what sort of power do these netbooks have?-- say for instance could it handle me running spotify and word at the same time?

It's not the most powerful processor in the world [/understatement] but it's a nice nifty little thing. It can run COD4, given a good enough graphics chip so yes, you should be able to use word and spotify at the same time.

In my first year of Uni I was going to take my P182 to uni, but decided to get an A05B instead :p

I didn't need a laptop in lectures either, as the lectures were put onto the portal the same day.

Well the XPS (Dell) is selling for £600, and they do plenty of deals all the time that would make it cheaper, so its possible they can go for £500. Also look up the Dell factory outlet (as I mentioned before), I got a new (usually the machines listed are machines that were built for an order that was subsequently cancelled, mostly never even leaving the factory) XPS that would have been over £1000 for £600, so a base model XPS would probably go for around £400.:)

(I assume Dell are still not classed as a competitor?):)

are you serious?... we're talking about the intel atom here?....

- so when it says refurbished, they may have actually never left the factory?

I'm not sure actually now, they seem to have changed the site. From what I understand though most are ones that haven't been sent.

:eek: thats insanse... is that just on the standard n10, ( how much are they, and what graphcis card/ graphics processor does it have? )

-- are n10's out yet, can't find them anywhere

is the architecture or whatnot just miles better than normal processors?
