Better bang for buck?

Hi
I'm thinking of upgrading from a P4-D @ 3G to a quad core processor. My current processor is showing it's age...

So the Q6600 (£145.69 inc VAT) looks a good deal at the moment , but should I stretch for a Q9450 (£234.99 inc VAT)? Would the extra 90 quid see me better for futureproofness?

Also as a small side question, any suggestions for a suitable mobo for the be good. I was thinking a Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard or a Abit IX38 QuadGT Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard as it's on offer this week!

Regards

Chris

I'd say save the money and go for the q6600. Proven performer and more than capable of providing the power you'd need!

As for the mobo - i'd happily go with either of those. I can also recommend the gigabytes too.

Sweet. Shall be clicking the checkout button in about an hour and a half. :D
Thanks :D

futureproofness?

All PCs are future proof - you can replace everything. :)

I'd say wait for new intel socket (Q4) or get cheap C2D until the new intel socket comes out.

Best bang for the buck is an e7200 (massively overclocked) with an abit IP35 Pro or something similar, I reckon.

Quads are really any use for encoding and similar tasks. Games aren't yet taking advantage of the extra power.

Yeah, I'd go for what roadie says and upgrade to Nehalem later :)

I'd imagine the upgrade of cpu, mobo and DDR3 to nahalem spec will all be very expensive and only provide a relatively marginal (cost vs performance) improvement in performance.

If tophee has a C2D capable mobo then the e7200 or q6600 represent an excellent and cheap boost in performance. Add additional DDR2 (very cheap) and he's good to go. Even a new board (P35) would be cheap and very effective.

By all means wait and see but i think that would be what i'd do.

The Q6600 is a great buy, and o/c's very well, but I don't think you need to go to the X38 for a good board, have a look at the P35s Asus P5K Pro or Gigabyte GA (E)P35 DS3P......
