Wanted to make this a thread in its own as i went a bit off topic on this thread

A Comment was made that there are better, quieter, nicer and cheaper machines than Shuttles ? I assume this was meant in the SFF area.

As I have just saved up a lot of money and am planning to spend the best part of £300 on a new SN25P shuttle, I am a bit concerned with a comment like this.

I know this is one persons opinion, but is there anything better I should consider ?

My shuttle SN26P setup HERE is quite and have had zero issues with it.The build quality is solid and for me nothing else comes close. :)

ive got a SN25P at the moment and the build quality is sweet. Its very well layed out and designed. Prior to this I had an SN95G5 and that was great too.

Not had a problem ever with either so never had to send either back so I cant comment on thier customer service.

Basically I have no complaints.

So you are not happy with your 25P Goksly ?
I am but Ive had to do a few things that I shouldnt have to do. Firstly, I have to clean the CPU fan at least every few months else it starts to give off a dull whine...
As mentioned, I had to change my sata cables as my computer became unstable after a few weeks. Having looked at the supplied cables, some of the out layer had been stripped and Im lucky that there was no data corruption. Also, Ive had to tape various parts of the outer cover and HDDs to stop a vibration hum.
The onboard sound solution is far from great as well. With PCI-E being the only option to upgrade and no good solutions for that.... well Im stuck with it. I blame myself for this as I should have researched it before buying.

I do like my shuttle - its fast, small and very quiet... but Ive had to do a lot of work that I shouldnt have had to have done for a £310 base unit. Premium costs should come with premium quality.

Should you ever have to RMA a shuttle - well you are in a world of pain. Most companies you will purchase off will only accept the shuttle for 30 days, after that you will have to post to holland. shuttle support is crap - no matter what anyone says.... just look at various forums. Turn around time is months and the odds of getting the RMA post back (probably £20 at least) is slim to say the least.

Yes yes - some people will say "but my shuttle is great!" - well good for you. You have just expressed your opinion and so have i :p

I think the person who made the original comment was thinking he was still back about 18 months ago, when the Biostar 2xx models were better specced, cooler running, better made and significantly cheaper than the equivalent shuttles that were starting to look very old indeed.

Even now, at the bottom end of the market, Biostar are still the way to go in my opinion. The S775 C1 is £80 for a very high specification.

At the end of the market that Shuttle actually wants to be in, ie. high end machines, then Biostar are not competitive in my opinion. The AOpen machines are very much compromised in terms of processor choice. ASUS have pretty much abandoned the SFF market in the UK, IWill make some very funky stuff, but it a dual 940-pin Opteron system is hardly mainstream.

That leaves me with Hoojum case and PSU coupled to a Shuttle motherboard. Shuttle have wisely made the motherboards available to Hoojum and you definitely could not fault the build quality there!

The SN25P's internal layout is pants in comparison to the SN26P!!

...The wiring loops in the SN26P are sooo much neater, you also get the right amount of cables, so you don't need a splitter :D

Shuttle build quality - good.
Customer service - bad.

I rang them to say the casing was scratched on my SN26P.

I got a "we can repair it" so I say "I don't want a repair on a £300 case.. I want a new one" and I was told they wouldnt do that.. appauling tbh.

Distance selling act 4tw!

the pain in initial setup ( if you forget something -like pci-e power cable- ) if you have to take most things out again to rectify, as apposed to a standard chasis which would take you seconds to complete, the actual use of my 25P has been pleasurable.

This is from a new user's point of view ( I have had my 1st shuttle less than a week), rather than from an extended amount of time but I am pretty impressed, even the sound quality to my ears is decent enough for well encoded mp3s (they dont sound any better or worse through an ipod compared to my shuttle thru an amp and decent speakers)

I seem to remember that the 26P is meant to be a quieter model than the 25, my 25 is noticable in a silent room but nothing unbearable by any means and thats with my 7800GT fan on standard, if I can find an app to turn this down it would be excellent

Pinkeyes - Just AOpen in general really. I could have just been unlucky but every shuttle ive had has been prone to random reboots, poor performance, noise, buzzing noises, poor build quality, boot problems etc... Kept my EY65 and it's been fantastic, never crashed or rebooted once. Build quality is nice and i think it looks neat (imo or course). I still use it for downloading and for a media box, looking at a newer version now.

sorry had a very busy morning - and a late night

Am I being a wimp in thinking rivaturner is little complicated?

I was expecting to just adjust some fan dials or sliders but from what I saw its like a direct registry editor? Or was I looking at the wrong thing. I really wasnt sure what values to put in as everything looked like a null entry ( completely blank)
