Better Value? Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's Elite 360?

Same can be said both ways, why is HD-DVD essential, why is wireless essential and so on. I don't think it is all that biased.

Think the whole idea was if you read the original article was to see what the functionality and features that the other one has out of the box. For example Xbox360 Elite comes with a head set, PS3 you have to buy a headset, Blue-Ray Drive in PS3 need a HD DVD in the 360 etc. I think its done very badly and you could say slightly biased. Why not compare a 360 elite with a 20Gb PS3? They are closer in specification, and you wouldnt need a Wi-fi adaptor for the 360.

Well, 100GB difference ;)

We could always compare the 360 elite with the PS3 elite ;)

Ok i was getting to that :p
This is a better comparison as the Wi-fi is not required and you cant get memory card readers ( dont think so?) for the Xbox360, which the PS3 60gb has.

Xbox360 Elite-$479.99

* Next-Gen disc format support: HD-DVD Add-on for Xbox 360 -- $199.99
* Charge and Play Kit for Controller -- $19.99 ( included with PS3)
* Xbox Live 360 12-month Gold Card -- $49.99 (free online gaming with PS3)
Total: $268.97 (not sure how to get this cheaper as most things seem to microsoft set prices)

PS3 20Gb $499

* Headset for online play: (included with Elite) Any blue tooth headset will be fine but say
for a good one $49.99
* HDMI Cable for PlayStation 3 (included with Elite) $7-$60 dont need to get official sony one, but we will use its price about $35
* A 120 Gb drive HD (included with Elite)-- seagate 2.5" -- $89.99 including free delivery
Total: $174.98 (Could be cheaper using a $10 HDMI cable and a $20 headset)

I know these are using US prices etc and the 20Gb model is not available here yet, but we dont have a confirmed price for the Euro Elite also so ive gone with prices i can find. Would link to prices but not allowed to so have to find them yourselves.
So altogether
Xbox360 Elite=$748.96

PS3 20Gb =$674.97
(could lower by about $50 if use cheaper components)

Both prices could vary a bit by shoping around but not much, cant find cheaper prices for the Xbox360 stuff though.

An alternative to wireless that is supposed to be very good (yet to try it) is homeplug ethernet via your electrical sockets.
Just worth a thought.

I think IF MS feel Sony are better value then they'll lower their prices, after all they can afford to as they are not losing $300 per unit, indeed they are making $60 from memory.

A major criticism of MS is the price of the wifi adapter, it could easily drop to £10, maybe it will, takes £50 off the net price, easy fix without dropping SKU prioces and showing market pressure.

I'm using Powerline adapters to connect my PS3 and they are very good, never had a issue yet and a peice of pee to set up.

I think th emajor criticism of MS sin't just the rpice of the wifi adapter but of all their peripherals tbh. The HDD, Controller, Play n Charge Kit, Wifi adapter etc are all over priced compaired to the competition.

perceived value for money depends entirely on what you want from the console; do you need wifi, hd playback, card readers ect?

ill tell you one thing, you wont find many people buying a £425 ps3 without intending to use its blueray movie playback. Thats actually the reason why a lot of peopel bought the console in the first place, including me. remind me, how much are the stand alone players again? indeed.....

In that light, any comparison make between the consoles will reflect this. HD playback was essential in my choice and that alone makes the ps3 better value for money. wifi? not needed but a nice addition which has saved me buying an external adaptor. hdmi is very welcome obviously. 60gb upgradable drive is a nice touch. card readers = great. the fact that sony actually encourage you to install another os and really get inside it astounded me, a welcomed move.....the list goes on.

I was waiting for the hdmi equiped xbox to surface and i would have bought it. but after hearing that there would be no internal hd drive, and that it almost certainly will be plagued by the same issues the current 360's have, it put me right off. The more i read about the ps3, the more i liked it. Now i have one, i know i made the right choice. its dead quiet, graphics are great, i have bluray playback now and even my keyboard and mouse work on it lol.

since im a hd-nut, i did what any other guy would probably do. aviod the 360 and buy a hd-dvd drive to use on my pc, then buy a ps3. thats hd-dvd and bluray sorted for me, with great gaming console thrown in too.

All the HD nuts I know would swear blind that all consoles suck for movie playback and standalone players are the only way to go.

The PS3 was known as the best BluRay player on the market at one point, and i wouldn't be surprised if that still wasn't the case, or at least one of the best. And that was from many AV nuts

That's the impression I was under.

Indeed, and with another 600,000 BD players (inside PS3) sold over the last weekend in Europe the format is looking stronger and stronger - I can see HD-DVD being dropped by retailers quite soon if BD carries on outselling it 3:1 like it is. Retailers hate format wars as they inevitably end up with surplus stock on their hands when there is a clear victor.

True or not that's what they say. I have no idea myself as I don't watch films on my consoles.

I am curious about this as a lot must have changed since November, can you show who is saying this?
Sure it used to be the case when the PS2 was around, but i have yet to read a review from anywhere, inc users at AV forums saying it is the best/one of the best.

its the games that count.

and currently the Xbox ownz the PS3

Have to agree 100%, and i can't see that changing for the next year at least, as it stands the Ps3 is a blu-ray player that can play games, the launch titles are generally poor, R:FOM is quite cool but is royally urinated on from a great height by GOW, which is superior in every single way. GT 5 isn't out for a year yet, and there isn't much that is getting me particularly excited games wise for the PS3 this year at all.

Where as there are tons of games that i really want for my 360 over the next year or so, Forza, GTR, Blue Dragon, Halo 3 etc, etc.

Until they start bringing out some top quality games my PS3 will be used as a blu-ray player and a highly expensive Ps2.

who says that, or are you guessing? :o its raved about.
3 of my movie nut mates.

Edit: It's more of a general statement than specifically talking about one console. But they have all told me that they won't get any game console to play movies on. I didn't press the point as I don't really care about it :)

360 all the way for me. I don't *need* or want any kind of HD movie playback at the moment. When I do I'd rather go for a dual format player rather than have it as a compulsary gift when I purchase a games console.
