Better win 7 or 8

I don't see what the fuss is about with the start menu, in essense, it works exactly the same as the one in Vista / 7.

You tap the winkey, then start to type the name of the program you want, then hit enter.

I find the new start menu great for dynamic tiles like the weather and news. Once you look past the graphical change, the other improvements in W8 make it well worth it.

I don't understand it either, and when i see peoples excuses for not wanting to use windows 8 because of the Start Screen Menu i just /sigh.

Basically Windows 8 is everything Windows 7 is but with a different Start Menu and new added features etc.

It really is down to personal preference, I don't think the OP will go wrong picking either OS for gaming.

And i agree with this, OP cant go wrong picking either OS.

Some people are easily confused and can't let go an 18year old design I'm afraid. The same people would have complained about "the stupid start button" in 1995 when it was first introduced. Oh how we laughed as people ranted that in order to "turn windows off" and "stop it" they had to press the "start button".... :)

The less said about the rants at Windows XP bloatware "Fisher Price" Luna GUI when it was released the better ;)

A lot of FUD about Win8 in some ways more so then Vista which is a shame since Win8 is a very good OS and easy to customize even for desktop users, you can avoid Metro for the most part even if you hate it,personally I find it very stable,no issues and all games I've thrown at it just work, even very old ones, don't know why there is still so much unfounded FUD about Win8,have these people ever tried Win8 for more then a week and tried to learn it properly?..I bet the answer is no.

Indeed...

To be fair I absolutely agree that Windows 7 is an awesome all round OS, and if you have it there's probably no "need" to move to 8 outside of some specific scenarios.

I just don't get the "W8 and Metro is for Tablets borked lol lol lol" fud sometimes. At worst it's a full screen start menu and at best it's a really useful interface into live tile presenting the info I want to me without me having to open up applications to find it.

I'm yet to find a game or app it doesn't run just fine...

Win 7.

If you want to turn your PC into a tablet, get Win 8.

Always stick with Win 7 64bit and wait for the next iteration of windows and pray it wont be a tablet OS hash job.

How's about you use the OS and come back and give an informed opinion, instead of regurgitating the opinion of others who haven't used the OS either....

This thread is typical of Windows 8 threads unfortunately, we've a guy who reckons he's used the OS for months but says he can't have 3 windows open at once, and there's others who just spout random rubbish as per my quote...

But from your posts on this forum already him using the OS and deciding he doesn't like it will not change what you say. So why would you bother saying that sentence?

For the record, I have Windows 8 on my laptop and don't see any need to upgrade my desktop from Windows 7.

One thing that still hasn't been implemented, which is madness. The ability to queue up copy commands. It's almost there in W8, it shows you all your file copy jobs and you can pause them. But you can't set them to complete one at a time.

Shame on Microsoft.

I'd rather have a debate with someone who knows what they are talking about, than someone who appears to be just making stuff up based on what someone else who is also making stuff up said.

Windows 8 on the laptop and 7 on the desktop makes a lot of sense since the OSs were designed primarily with those respective form factors in mind.

Well that I can fully understand, but I have it and whenever I say I don't like bits about it I still get the tirade of abuse.

Yeh. In the future I may well install Win8 on my desktop, but not right now. Maybe next format.

Lets be honest here,I don't like bits of Win8,Win7,Vista,XP,98 etc how far you want me to go back?...end of the day no OS is perfect not even Linux etc.... I do admire Microsoft for doing something new and changing the old UI from Win95 to Win7 to something new,I'm sure they will improve on Metro etc down the road ,end of the day Win8 is a very solid OS ie stable, fast ,very good compatibility etc.. just some people don't like Metro or other minor things,I felt the same with Win7,Vista,XP etc like I stated so nothing new there.

Bottomline Win8 is a very polished OS for new UI design/change, just needs some further refinements in the next OS .

Getting back on topic,I still have yet to find a game I can't run, makes sense to go with Win8 with regards to gaming, most game companies even Nvidia/AMD will be concentrating games/drivers on Win8 etc...since its the new kid on the block and latest official OS,throw in all the OEM hardware that comes with Win8,so will be hard for them to ignore Win8,throw in pricing ,longevity, security, features, no brainer to go with Win8.

Shall I forward you my proof of purchase? I'm amazed at how I'm perceived as a lying because I have something negative to say

I've got two machines (media PC and netbook) running 8 since release day. I have 7 running on my main desktop.

I started off hating 8, but now just mildly dislike it :p

Everything works in 8 and there are some fairly major improvements over 7. I can't get on with the disjointed feel between metro and the desktop though. I am a fairly heavy user of the start menu in 7, and I hate being completely taken away from what I'm working on whenever I use it in 8. I don't like the workaround of pinning absolutely everything you use to the taskbar because I like to keep my desktop as clutter free as possible.

If you're going to use your machine mainly for gaming that's probably not going to be an issue as you can have all your games one click away from the start menu which works well.

I've had a lot of stick in other threads for disliking 8, and I'll probably get more now. Since I'm using both OS's I reckon I'm allowed to express my opinion though.

I also had some issues with older games that I still enjoy playing such as warhammer dawn of war I, I recently downgraded back to windows 7 home prem. Kind of regret buying windows 8, i'll probably keep it until they release sp1 and if it offers anything special

Windows 8, only takes a short time to get used to it. It's like with every other o/s upgrade people moan about the changes but then just get on with it.
