Beware CCleaner users

For anybody using CCleaner, I'd strongly advise against upgrading to v7.

There is a lot of hate online for it right now and after trying it on a virtual machine, I can see why. The new interface is simply gash and nowhere near as easy to use as previous versions. Then there's there's the lack of customisation of user settings. Then there's missing options, like disk wiper. Those are just the faults that I've found myself.

I genuinely couldn’t tell you the last time I bothered with cc cleaner - though I imagine there are still occasions when it might be useful.

The only reason I've still been using it was for the secure wipe feature. Are there any better alternatives for that? I've been a bit lazy just using an old portable version of CCleaner on a pen drive.

I only ever used the Mac version of CCC and I’d switched to Clean My Mac a few years before I stopped using any Macs in 2018.

CMM just did more faster and had a better interface.

I use the free Macrorit data wiper form HERE, They also do a good free partition manager.

It had it's uses when Windows 7 was still a thing. We used to use it as part of a PC health check when I used to do home PC support. I don't see the point of it these days as the OS takes better care of itself.

Many motherboards have a built in secure wipe in the bios these days.

The portable version has its uses, specifically in 2 areas only,. registry orphan cleanup which are entries left behind by uninstalled apps/games etc which uninstallers never clean up, and general Windows cleanup which much of which the Windows built in cleanup does do but some items are always left which this removes. You just need to know what you are doing because without setting up specific selections, you severely risk messing up your Windows, so whilst they may market it as an easy to use tool, it is really only for those who know what they are doing and have a very specific purpose to use it:

Ditto. I rarely use it on my home computer but I just download the latest portable version and use it for what I need. Mainly a reg clean or, more likely, removing errant program entries from the Add/Remove list.

i only ever used it for the registry cleaning portion of it - initially always made backup of the registry before deleting stuff but never had an issue so became a bit blase about doing that. i felt it worked well

Ive used it for years. Was just nice and quick, Couple of clicks and things got tidied up. Wish the house had a Ccleaner function
