Beyerdynamic T70

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion Iceman.

I have had a quick glance at amps, no idea what to go for though, or even how I'd set one up with my computer etc. :p

Honestly there's no need to go mad with an amp. I run a Soundblaster ZX with a Schiit (yes really that's the name) Valhalla tube amp. I simply connect the amp to the output on the back of the card using a 3.5mm to RCA connector and then the headphones into the amp.

I personally love the sound of tube amps since they give such a warm sound with a very wide sound stage, makes a hell of a difference over the regular amp that's in the SB ZX. They can be ordered in the UK from a few suppliers and come in around $350 which is incredibly inexpensive for a tube amp.

Failing that or if you're not willing to part with that much cash, there are plenty of good solid state amps available from the rainforest for $100-150 that will work well.

Sadly the Speedlink clip-on mic has already broken, I've been careful with it but the wire is so thin I don't think it can stand much use. Nothing ventured though at £7. It wasn't an overly elegant solution either with the two wires and you had to ensure it was positioned correctly too or it was muffled and quiet.

I've ordered the PC 360 headset, for a quite reasonable £110. I think my PC 350 is good, but it's very worn, and I want to try out an open headphone, as I've never used one.

So, I'll be able to properly test the PC 360 in my common use environment, to ensure an open headphone is ok, then, assuming I like it (and I probably will), I'll then make a decision on the T70 vs T90. I'm definitely leaning towards the T90, I'd be genuinely shocked if I preferred the T70 sound and general quality. The T90 looks much nicer and has better quality earpads etc as well. The general consensus is that it's a more musical version of the T1. Of course when you break it down the T1 will be better, but definitely not for me, not for over twice as much.

I should be getting the PC 360 today so will perhaps go and test out the Beyer's tomorrow or Friday, I'll have to swap between headset and headphone depending on what I'm doing but that's no big deal. I wonder if there's some sort of desktop amp I can connect to my soundcard (even though it has an amp) that means I could have both connected or something like that... hm.

For £110 that's a good buy. I think they were £130 on release, which ideally is what they should be selling for. £180 that they currently are, is nonsense really.

The Z has separate speaker output, although I don't know how the volume control works. Are the separate controls for speaker and headphone volume? If that isn't functional, you could add a headphone amp to the speaker out, then connect any headphones you buy to that; leaving the headphone out on the Z for the 360.

Oh sorry. Getting you mixed up with someone else. :p

As for the Xense, yes that also has separate speaker output, so you could add a HP amp to that. Not quite as good as the stereo speaker out on the Essence, but not a lot you can do about that.

I've been using the PC 360 for a couple of hours now and really like it.

Open headphones don't sound as "airy" as I thought they would, though I definitely prefer the more open sound. The ear pads are quite firm but they'll no doubt bed in, overall comfort is good. Even at a fairly high volume it doesn't leak a great amount of noise, though you can hear it.

The design of it is great too, you mute the microphone by raising and lowering the boom arm, and the volume control is on the side of the ear piece. Much better than on the wire.

The audio quality is very good, so I'm happy with it.

Now I want the T90 even more... :p

So, after a good while using the PC 360 (which is fairly good, no issues with it), I found that open headphones aren't really ideal for where I'm using them, sadly. This more or less ruled out the T90, which I was largely set on.

Back to the start then, I've bought a T70 and will see what I think to it. I can return it if I don't like it, but I certainly hope I will. I'll compare it to the DT770 and PC360 and post my thoughts later on if you're interested.

First impressions of the build quality though - wow. Absolutely top notch, much better than I was expecting.

Early impressions after a good hour or so of listening:

Absolutely brilliant. People are either plain wrong or I don't understand how bass works, as it seems perfectly fine, certainly no worse than the DT770, it doesn't shake you but it shouldn't really.

As for the detail and sound quality, it's really something else. So clear and precise but in a positive way, it makes it better to listen to.

I was expecting some sort of hollow lack of bass, but I don't hear that... :p

Tremendously comfortable as well, more so than the DT770, the ear pad/head band material is lovely.

Glad you're happy with them, they're a huge step up from the DT series IMO. Shame you can't use the T90's, as they are again, quite a significant jump!

Beyer make some fantastic quality headphones, wait until you hear those with a proper amp now, it'll blow you away.
