Well, finally got round to playing this, completed it yesterday evening.
I rather enjoyed it. The story was quite good although never quite given the chance to fully develop due to the way it's presented as snippets at various times of her life. The characters were mostly pretty good, a testament to using decent actors unlike Heavy Rain. Ellen Page did a superb job as did the people responsible for putting her likeness in the game, Jodie looked and moved just like her, the facial and body animations were very well done.
Visually and technically, it was very impressive. A huge step-up over Heavy Rain, visual detail was superb with very little slowdown, the art style was very nice and attention to detail in the environments - some of which were quite impressively large - was good. I'd have liked the opportunity to explore more of those environments than just hitting the invisible wall where Jodie turns around, but it's understandable.
Gameplay-wise, it still felt like an interactive story rather than your standard game, but it certainly felt like you were more in control of what was happening than in Heavy Rain, which resorted to button prompts far too often. Far fewer annoying QTE-style sequences compared to Heavy Rain too, and I think being able to switch to Aiden and roaming (relatively) freely helped shake the feeling that you're just following on-screen prompts all the time.
All that said, I can't say I really felt like I connected with Jodie or was emotionally-involved in the game. I hate to compare it to The Last Of Us in that respect as they set the bar monstrously high as it is, but I felt for Joel and Ellie throughout that game and became genuinely concerned about their feelings and well-being. Can't really say the same about Jodie; the final reveal about Aiden at the end lacked impact, and it felt like her final decisions which shape the end of the game were a bit rushed.
I'll give it another playthrough some day and try doing everything differently to see what happens. Judging by the amount of trophies there seems to be a lot of variety in how things can play out, but it doesn't seem like it really shapes the ending that much. That aside though, I enjoyed playing it and considering it's getting quite cheap now, I'd gladly recommend it as long as people recognise that this isn't your standard third-person action game.
