BF2 lag! Will 2GB RAM help?

Yep, its all about the textures. Because the maps are so big and detailed there is a lot of stuff that all needs to be stored in your memory for fast access. If its not all there as you move about the map it has to look on your hard drive for the info and as we all know hard drives are slow and that is why it lags.

Upgrading to 2gb made a HUGE difference to me. Before I got lag on medium settings now I can run with everything on high and not get any lag what so ever!

You guys might like this guide I found the other day, I personally will vouch that 2Gb makes a huge difference but only because I changed to 2Gb on Thursday after playing for a month on 1Gb with exactly the same grfx/cpu.

Read from near the bottom for pictures and explanations of all the video settings. :)

I have BF2 on 2 machines. i just stuck it my wifes X2 4400 which came with 2gb, 7800GT. It still lags at the start but has the settings on high, occationally it lags.

My own machine has a P4 650 3.4Ghz with 1GB, and a lowley X600 card... it does lagg on high settings but is okay on low to medium. It only lags for 4-5 secs at the start and i'm generally one of the first 5 people on "scene" when a map loads up.. Trying to get 2GB on this machine but it didn't like the extra two 512's..

I think there maybe an issue with your system.. like it needs a decent Defrag or there a heat or voltage issue. or there is loads of crap running in the background on windows eating up your cpu time or memory..??

2GB does make a difference but if there is crap in the background or BF2's files are spread out all over your hard drive it won't make a huge amount of difference..

EDIT i see you have wifi.. this does make difference so much so i've spent last week wiring ethernet cable up into my loft and back to the pc & router as it was causing issues with lag and downloads.

I have checked pretty much everything. I have defragged, heat is fine, voltages are fine. I always quit my firewalls and AV's before I join and check my CPU usage. It's always around 1% and when it loads the maps and first joins it never usualy goes over 20% so I really don't think It's the CPU. When I alt+tab out of the game I can see it is eating most of my memory up. I will see what happeneds when I get the 2GB.

I have a very similar spec to the original poster's and suffered similar problems. I upgraded to 2gb on Friday and have been blown away by the difference - loading times have more than halved (from about 3 mins to 30 seconds!) and the initial choppiness and lag experienced in maps has vanished. I'm actually starting to enjoy the game again!

I don't know if it affects BF2 or not but I remember with BF1942 a lot of the performance issues could be helped (if not completely resolved) by lowering the sound quality to the lowest setting... it made a big difference for me back then and I still do this with a lot of games when I suffer from performance issues: it's funny how often it helps.

It is the 10 minute load up/10 minute lag that i think is far in excess of my system and were only talking about 0.2ghz slower.. and you have a better card.

I'll see what happens when i get 2GB (1x1GB) through the post tomorrow for the P4 (bl**dy wish AMD had made the X2 able to take DDR2!!)

But for me it can't really get much faster as i don't experence much lag and only a few minutes loading between games. Even my P4 1.7M, 1gb, 6800Go laptop doesn't take ten minutes (does lag tho..due to the wifi mostly)

Can someone tell me what the latest drivers are for the 6800GT? I haven't updated these for at least 8 months+.

This also might help, a good start would be the latest Geforce drivers on thier site or whoever manfactured your card, see if they have a driver download page.

I installed them a few days ago, didn't make a difference :( I am pretty sure It's the RAM, can't be the connection because it takes forever to load the single player maps!

I went from 768mb ram to 2gb Geil and the load times for BF2 came down BIG TIME!! Defo worth it, soooo much smoother. Its defo the way to go nowadays anyway. And go for the 84.22 drivers. Work a treat ;)

Just installed the RAM and the difference is amazing! Loading times much, much quicker, absolutely NO LAG at the beginning. Everything on max including 8X AA and 16 X AF and It's still as smooth as silk! It also exit's the game instantly without playing music and lagging my whole P.C.

Very happy indeed.. :D

I presume you still get that *DUNG DUNG* noise as it exits? What is that anyway even though it doesn't do any harm it sounds like a crash.

I get that as well, nice to know I'm not the only one, though it is wierd as there's nothing in Event Viewer so I guess it's nothing worth worrying about
