BF2 Performance Issues.

I have been playing BF2 for a while now, and I havent ever been able to max out the graphics settings, which makes me sad. Normally on high the game runs quite smoothly, but I get frequent stutters. I'll be running along beside a wall and all is fine, turn a corner and stuttering kicks up until I get back behind the wall :(

Spec:

E4400 C2D @ 2.7Ghz
2GB Ballistix PC5300
GeForce 6800GT with latest drivers
Xfi (Sound seems fine, never seemed to affect performance)

If anyone has any advice on how I can stop the stuttering I will gladly hear it, I've had to drop all graphics settings to low, and I'm sick of it :(

I think its just your card holding you back mate, my 2 6800s in SLi could never run max settings. Try turning the texture setting down.

your never going to be able to come close to getting max settings with a 6800GT. turn a few things down, draw distance 90%, medium everything. see how it does. defrag should also help.

aside from that new gfx card time.

My mate plays BF2 at full settings @ 1680x1050 with 2xAA at 25-30fps with a 6800GS. What's so different about the GT?

If you running along and you get sent back a few paces, isn't that a connection issue? I don't see how your hardware would do that.

I personally wouldn't be able to play at 25-30FPS. It would do my head in.

Well yeah, but he isn't a serious gamer. He's used to console frame rates. Anyway, my point is he's playing with a pretty high res all on full. Helium should be able to play it pretty high without these stutters. They don't sound like graphics stutters to me, not if he is being sent back a few paces.

Yeah sorry, my comment was kind of unrelated :p

No no, I dont get sent back a few paces, but when I return to where I previously was, the issue sometimes stops. It's not when I look out over the whole of the map or anything either, it can be anything from that to looking at a barrel, or the AT mine at my feet. It seems utterly random and not related to the amount of detail on the screen.

Oh I see, my bad.

That is odd. What OS are you running?

It almost sounds like a lack of RAM, but you clearly have enough. Once you have traveled the map at least once, does it get any better? Or does this happen regardless of how long you have been on the server?

Regardless of either of those, I thought it might be loading lag for new textures etc, but the problem persists :(
Ordered a 2900XT now, so we'll see if that helps. If it doesnt I will be crying for a while.

did you try turning texture detail to medium? thats the main option to fiddle with if your gfx card is running out of ram and you get stuttering.

You should be able to run it on high 1280x1024 with AA turned off and shadows and dynamic lighting set to low/medium (I know its not completely high) and get good frames if you have 2gb.
try clearing out the battlefield cache:

C:\Documents and Settings\WINDOWS LOGIN NAME\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Back it up first in case of probs.
