I'm having a problem with the sound in bf2 where I get popping/crackling noises and random in game noises from all over the map right next to me.

Running Windows XP (32bit), Creative Audigy 2 ZS (latest official creative drivers). I have installed the drivers twice, redone the 1.3 bf2 patch. I dont know why it is doing this, sometimes I can play a round with normal sound other times it just kicks in for a min or two with this ear splitting noises :( .

Anyone have any ideas?

Update your OpenAL <here>

Go to your Battlefield folder and rename BF2OpenAL.dll to BF2OAL.backup

Go to c:\windows\system32 and copy the OpenAL.dll to your battlefield folder, then rename it to BF2OpenAL.dll.

oops reread the thread and see it should be in system32 folder. I did a search and found OpenAL32.dll is this the correct file?

Yes thats the correct file. Fisrt run the exe from the link in the 2nd post, then copy OpenAL32.dll to your BF2 folder (backup the original file first).

that also fixed a crash I was having with bf2 as well

http://www.openal.org/downloads.html

Then open: OpenAL1.1 SDK for windows

this redirects you to a Creative page
The executable file is at the bottom of the page

This is the one I downloaded and installed. Then copyed the OpenAL32.dll from my system32 folder and followed the above steps. Worked a treat.

Good Luck.

Strangely enough I reinstalled this yesterday and I had the problem as well...even though on a previous installation on that computer (that I played 200+ hours of BF2 on) didn't do it. Thanks for the fix, works a charm.

BF2 has to be one of the best and worst games ever. :D
