That's quite interesting - if you look here (Swedish site) they got quite poor results with Phenom II quads and dual-cores.
Yes, but keep in mind they used a 6990, when you use a single 6970, you'd find that the gpu's wouldn't be able to keep up with that framerate, if framerate drops by, say 70-80%, then you can clearly see the Phenom x4 is clearly capable of that lower framerate.
EDIT:- Its also worth noting that, if you can afford a 6990 then a 2500k isn't going to be a problem, but when you're on a 6950/560/maybe 570/6970, essentially gaming that the vast majority of people do, on a budget, then a £80 quad core Phenom x4 is MORE than enough.
Thing is, how many people run say quadfire 6990's, or quad sli 580gtx's, few and far between and not a single one of them would be using an £80 cpu. In terms of the majority of people, infact the vast majority of gamers, and BF3 players will be on something like a 5770 or slower, then a £100+ cpu is a waste and a "budget" cpu like a £60 dual or £80 quad, is going to be more than enough. This has always, always been the case for gaming.
