BF3 GTX580 @ 2560 x 1440

Question:

I have a GTX580 1.5GB version that I currently use to run BF3 on a Dell 24" screen. It runs really well on ultra, but tbh I play at medium settings all the time as it makes spotting people easier. Its fairly standard practice in my clan to play at these settings for matches, so I do it all the time. And honestly when playing I can hardly notice the difference between medium and ultra anyway. So on medium settings @ 1920 x 1200 I typically get over 60fps.

But now I'm getting greedy and I'd really like to get myself a 27" IPS panel @ 2560 x 1440. The question I have is; what kind of fps can I expect from a singe GTX580 at this resolution? If I purchase the screen now can I expect smooth fps for match play? Or should I wait for the next gen cards to arrive before buying the screen?

And no, not interested in crossfire or sli, its too much grief.

TY!

I would do what i plan to do and hold off for a few months on the Dell u2711 until the new ATI or Nvidia cards come out but as you dont mind playing on medium u might get away with it...

At best prepare for a 30% dip in frame rates, you will probably have to put textures down from ultra too as 1.5GB Vram is not enough.

All settings on Ultra, no MSAA, and only SSAO set at 2560x1440 for me => GTX 480 in SLI and it is driving the game along at very reasonable FPS (45-50+ I would guess).

1.5 GB limit has not affected me in any way for setting Textures to Ultra.

I was looking at one of the hazro screens tbh. I love my dell 24" but the dell 27" is £200 more expensive than the hazro. £200 more expensive for what exactly, a better stand?

2560*1600 SLI 480's gives me 45 minimum, and 85 max, averaging around 55-60.
Ultra settings bar MSAA at 2x and deferred aa at medium, HBAO/SSAO etc are all on as well.

Edit: Should point out thats with the 480's at 800/2000 and the I7930 @ 4 Ghz. I havent tested with one, or three cards since I need to fix one of my 480's after knocking it :(

I have the Hazro (WC) myself, but bear in mind that the Dell has a lot more connectivity options as well as the technical support (some folk on the Hazro thread who had issues are not having an easy time of it, so be prepared to return under LDSR in the worst case).

I agree with you though, the Hazro represents stupendous value for what it is, and I have not had any issues with mine. Also, if you check out the reviews on TFTCentral, it goes into more detail. For me, the deal-maker was the low (relative) input lag on the panel.

2560x1600 here, everything maxed, 6950 crossfire (shaders unlocked and overclocked) 70+ FPS at all times.

VRAM usage hovers around 1.4-1.5GB. (3GB crossfired).

With medium settings at the greater resolution I don't think you'll have any problems at all.

Its difficult to tell really, everyone seems to be posting with crossfire or sli set-ups, and I'm unsure how they measure up or down to a single 580.

Has anyone tested at this res with a single gpu? I'd like to get a rough idea of whether the 580 is up to the job of driving a screen at 1440p ~60fps for a month or so until the new cards arrive.

works fine on my 27" with 580 SLI

All this "VRAM" talk seems bolloks to me in the real world, ive never noticed anything not flying along....

Aha! Thanks garsands, that's useful. And you have a similar system to me with the 920. What bf3 quality settings did you use for that test? And was it playable at all times? Or did it get choppy at 34fps?

Your post said 1560mb but the screenshot says 1680mb, am I missing something?
Also was it a full 64 man server?

lol sorry so it does.
My poor old eyes let me down text is very small in windows at 2560x1440
It was 1680mb memory usage.

No it was not a full 64 man server it was a very quick half hearted test to help & forum member out.

But tonight I will have a few rounds with everything maxed & on a full 64 man server.

Is there any one map that would give the card a good workout?

with the settings I use I find I get just under 1.5gb usage at peak on a 64 server ona big map. If I up the AA to 4x and the deferred AA etc then it causes the odd stutter as If a happen to turn around and then people blow up a building etc so that too much stuff changes and it has to load some more stuff from slow old normal RAM. With enough the settings up then it causes my average to drop from 55-60 down to 35 ish with drops below that.

So yea, if you encounter some slowdowns (you will on a 1.5gb card at literal MAX settings) just turn down the AA and it free's up enough for everything else to stay on ultra.

You get more connection and it is pre calibrated for SRGB and adobe RGB if you are into photos etc.

Umm and yea probably better QA than Hazro too and a better warranty i suspect. The only thing that would tempt me from hazro would be the glass fronted 2560x1600 IPS.

But they cant keep the dust out on glass panels so ill take pre calibration over price but everyones will be different..

Any update garsands?

I just played about 10 minutes on Kharg Island with 63/64 slots when I joined, Ultra settings @ 1920x1080 with Blur turned off and I was on the ground the whole time mainly trying to get some pesky jets (As Engineer).

2826mb is double the actual amount used because of CF, so the result is 1413mb used.

I think I saw something about AMD having better compression so it will use less memory, so Nvidia results may be higher.

sorry not yet,
I logged on last night only to find BF wanted to do a 3+GB patch so gave up.
It's finshed downloading now so will give it a bash.

My Hazro (HZ27WC) arrived this morning, so assuming there are no faults with the panel I'll be conducting some tests when I get back from work. I'll post the results at the weekend.
