BFG 8800GTX Overheating?

Hi,

I've recently been having problems with my BFG 8800GTX "black screening" and sometimes nvlddmkm.sys blue screening after a while in games.

I have reinstalled Vista and tried everything I can possibly think of.

I then decided to download nTune and manually stick the GPU fan speed up to 100% as well as take the side panel off my PC, this took off about 20oC (from ~82 in games to ~62 :P). I have the Lian Li PC-7 II case with 2 120mm Yate Loon fans & a Scythe Ninja.

The GPU never went over 84 so I was assuming that was fine which is why I never suspected heat.

Anyway, today I must have played at least 2-3 hours of Titan Quest (if you know this game you'll know it makes your GPU very hot) with no crashes, the temperature maxed at around 65 with 100% GPU fan speed & side of case off.

Anyway to my question... could a chip that isn't monitored maybe be overheating causing the crashes? Could the graphic card somehow be configured incorrectly to panic when the GPU gets to ~85? Any ideas?

I really would like to put my side panel back on and not have to manually put the fan speed to 100% every time I want to play a game, I shouldn't have to...

Thanks,
Craig.

My fan is always at 100% as Rivatuner does this for me every start up. It's actually very quiet. My 2900Pro, erm lol  now that is noisy.

I run my fan at 100% as I overclock when playing games and downclock for Internet use, media etc. The only time my overclock fails is when I get a small build up of dust. I've only had to clean it twice but both times the removal of the dust stopped my crashing. Honestly, a small bit of dust can cause a lot of problems with these cards.

It's either dust or your case has bad airflow. I've ran with my side panel off for about a year and a bit now as my old X2 CPU @ 2.8Ghz wasn't prime stable with it on so I'm just used to it now :). Oh, I also have a 92mm fan lying on the back of the GTX blowing on the back of the core. I've had it on there since day one so I don['t know if that has been helping.

I wouldn't have thought my case was bad airflow, intake 120mm Yate on the front which passes through the 120mm on the Ninja and out the back 120mm Yate.

The weird thing is the graphic card never goes over 85oC so there's no real reason for it to crash...

Is there any way to check the cut off settings for the card?

Well two things:

You removed your side panel and upped the fan to 100% and temps dropped 20C
Try putting the side panel back on and leave the fan at 100%. If ok, and I suspect it will, you just need to sort the manually setting of the fan to 100%.

Use rivatuner and setup profiles so that the fan goes to 100% when the gpu hits 70 or 75 say.

Problem solved.

Yep, it seems fine with the side panel on @ 100% GPU fan speed. Only problem is, Rivatuner doesn't like Vista x64 due to unsigned drivers :(

No add box?

Nope :(

why should they i just told him to clean it ban u for quoting people who help people ;) tbh

Sorry for crapping on your thread Craig321. I just want to ensure Psychas that I was just messing around as the smiley's should have painted that picture for me. I was mocking that your post could lead to an accident with a 9 step tutorial.

I don't want you banned........... for now ;).

On Topic.

Is the fan too noisy at 100% for you Craig?.

It is a bit noisy, but if it's only running at 100% during a game & it stops it from crashing then it doesn't bother me at all :)

RivaTuner is working well now :D *uninstalls nTune*

That's the spirit. Maybe just about any noise is acceptable to me after my 2900Pro leaf blower :D.

Glad it's all working now also. Now onto some games ;).

You can also use EVGA Precision 1.1.1. You can set upto 10 profiles if you wish and even work on my G15 display, that's the main reason I use it on my OCUK 8800GTX.

Your card really pumps out some temps mine only reads 65C underload. You could you take off your cooler and try reseating with some good thermal paste and blow out any dust build up as well.

Don't know if it works with Vista, but you might try this...

Much better than profiles (the fan speed goes up or down according to temps, linearly), and is a doddle to setup (unlike profiles!).

There's NO way I'd go back to using profiles after this method.
